Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

Here is a good takedown of the emotional blackmail attempt by the elixer salesman.

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/345762/don’t-let-logic-ruin-good-law

It makes no rational sense whatsoever to privilege the testimony of Newtown’s parents in our deliberations. The children of Sandy Hook were randomly chosen victims of abhorrent and reckless violence. It is reasonable to seek the counsel of victims if you suspect that they can help you prevent future atrocities. But we wouldn’t expect the casualties of bombings to have particular insight into how best to deal with security, nor the victims of a gas leak to shed light on the details of piping infrastructure. Cruel as it might seem to observe, you are not afforded greater insight into the legal and economic questions surrounding gun control because a bullet fired by a madman has hit you or somebody you love.

Burr voted to allow it to come to the floor and then voted against the Amendment. Disgusting.

I don't know what the argument against it is. It's not anywhere close to a violation of Second Amendment rights. In fact, it has nothing to do with the Second Amendment whatsoever. Furthermore the NRA was in favor of it universal instant background checks at all gun shows in 1999, which they articulated in front of the House Judiciary Committee by none other than their boy Wayne La Pierre. Just idiotic.

I would give you posrep if I could. Must spread more around.

Can someone succinctly explain why expanded background checks or a national gun registry would be a bad thing?

This shit pisses me off so much.

I am one of the few people who is not passionate about this debate so I have not read this thread...forgive me if this has been covered.

What is the argument against this bill? Is it simply that "it will not help to stop these mass shootings" (I happen to agree with that)? That is the only one I have heard and I don't think it is enough to vote against it. Again, I am not passionate about this so I am not disgusted that it did not pass the Senate but I can't think of a good reason why someone would vote it down. What is the harm of passing it?

The fact that it's a felony to have a registry of guns and gun owners is absurd too.

I'm still trying to figure why a well regulated militia wouldn't have background checks or a list of people who are in it.

I have trouble with the differences in guns available at the time of the writing and those available today.

On Morning Joe, Scarborough really laid the lumber to those that voted against this bill both Pubs & Dems calling them cowards. Its a bill 90% on Americans want and 88% Pubs want yet these cowardly bastards that are held hostage by lobbyists can't sack up and get something passed. I hope and pray every one of these fuckers are primaried the next time they come up for reelection. All those Dems from normally red states (Baucus, Begich, Pryor, Landrieu, etc.) can expect Obama to pour tons of dough into primaries against them because of this vote. The same should be said for the chicken shit Pubs that voted it down as well.

I could care less if the Dems lose their majority in the Senate over this because they like the Pubs are sent there to do a job, not warm a seat for 2-3 terms. All these clowns need to go.

Cunts. Dirty, syphilitic cunts. The lot of them.

Probably the first time you, I, and Obama have agreed on anything. I like to shoot guns, I own guns, but what fucking moron is against comprehensive background checks for guns? Our federal government continues to prove that it is nothing more than a joke.

slippery slope man. just one short step from watered down background checks to gun confiscation by a tyrannical dictatorship. I know because Wayne LaPierre told me.
