The 10 year contract Jim Grobe signed after the 2006 ACC Championship runs until the 2016 season.

All of a sudden, our coaching staff is being aggressive about playing true freshmen.

This year’s true freshmen will be seniors or redshirt juniors on that team. The 2014 recruiting class would all be slated to finish their careers after Grobe's contract is up. He's only under contract to coach 2015 recruits for 2 seasons.

Grobe is 61 and would be 64 at the end of his contract. It's certainly not unheard of for someone to coach into his late 60s. Obviously you have JoePa and Bowden. Bill Synder came back to coaching at 69. Beamer is older than him and recent ACC coaches Spaz, O'Brien, and Butch Davis are as well.

I think he’s looking for an extension, possibly within the next year. If he plans to coach into his late 60s, he's not just going to stop coaching at Wake at the end of his contract and look elsewhere. Without an extension, he's a lame duck coach going forward unless he has a coach-in-waiting lined up.

I think it's simpler than that ... he's a competitor and he's gunning for wins.

Well he's adopting a more short-term strategy to winning than in the past.

With a bowl win in 2014 and 2015, he'll deserve an extension "for life."

We need to see improvement quickly tho

Has he not witnessed Jeff [Redacted]? Grobe could take a shit on Hatch's desk and get an extension.

yeah this. With Bz suriving this year its really hard to imagine what rock bottom would be in football. couple of winless seasons in a row?

Personally I think that's led to Grobe's complacency as anything. He sees Jeff [Redacted] getting praised and retained by the AD for doing a crap job and Grobe is sitting back thinking, "I won an ACC title at what as been a traditional joke in football, taken this program to half of all it's bowl games, have the 3 best season in school history, have an amazing record against in state competition. Why should I exert myself too much when my job must be more secure than fort know, since a complete loser like Jeff [Redacted] has job security here."

With how bad basketball has been maybe Grobe's finally decided to try and turn the tide and make Wake a football school for good

Will not believe talk about WF football playing many true frosh in 2013 until I see it. With few exceptions, teams that heavily rely on true frosh are awful; so, if that's the plan, I am skeptical about it bringing instant positive results in 2013. My guess is that Grobe's comments were intended to light a fire under the returning talent so that they do not expect to coast into playing time next year. I would put the O/U on true frosh burning shirts at 3.5, and I would take the under.

There was that dude who posted that "things will change after 2016" then swiftly deleted it.

I get the impression that he will hang 'em up by then at the latest

That's very possible, but he'd be retiring at 64 while others are still going.

As I posted on the recruiting thread, 2016 is a do-or-die year. The 2015-16 basketball team and the 2016 football team will be very experienced, especially if a lot of true freshmen play. Then both will be very young the next year.

Jim Grobe stopped coaching a few years ago. He stands there with his arms folded and daydreams about playing golf. He doesn't talk to or interact with his players on the field. His teams tend to take on his "exciting" personality.

R We saying Coach Grobe may have some motiviation now, may want to play with his hair on fire,... sounds kinda good. It would be nice to get one last run out of him before we turn the keys of the WF car over to a young dynamic coach?

I don't think he wants an extension. I think he wants to go out with some bowl wins. Whether that happens is anybody's guess but that is my hunch.
