Also, Chic already did this thread, better than I did, too.

ETA: the results shows 71/163 had or are in school for a "doctorate" in one of the three i listed on this thread

What about DOs? I know the MDs on this board are with me when I say they shouldn't be called doctor, either. Amirite?

why did it make you laugh?

a) It sounded extremely formal (very grammatically correct) for someone trying to talk about the boards being a place for all people to come together, regardless of education,
and
b) it brought to mind a childhood memory of one of the "little kids" of the neighborhood (our 'hood was split into 'big kids' and 'little kids' by age) declaring that the woods that ran behind all of our houses, which had turned into a jungle gym/natural fort/awesome barricade of fallen trees after Hurricane Fran, should be the one place where everyone should be equal whether they're a big kid or a little kid. Naturally, this lead to a big kid vs. little kid War of the Woods that lasted for about 4 days.

I like phd=pretty huge d as a tag, maybe I should put that in my email sig ;)

Area behind the Walshes?

Area behind the Walshes?

yeah, more behind my house than walshes, though. theirs kind of went more towards the street on the other side of the ravine, ours was wider woods/big hill/creek until the golf course.

I assumed it was just for PhDeac. That's what the boards have done to me.

no, I think that's likely how it was intended, but I was just going to coopt it, but I was thinking of it in a positive light (as in, having a big d is a good thing rather than being a big d). Either way, I don't think it applies to me personally (last time I checked anyway), I just thought it was kind of funny.

I was going to say, you hide it well.

I realize you're semi-trolling, but to answer your question - not at all. Some of the best physicians I know are DOs. While it's fair to speak in generalizations, I'm not on board with degrading the degree.

No. They are doctors and typically are called such.

I definitely think it's appropriate to refer to PhDs as "doctor".

At least no one here has identified themselves as a chiropractor that wants to be called doctor, then again they probably don't post too busy scamming people.

I got a PhD alright, a playa hater degree. I hate you, I hate you, I don't even know you and I hate your guts.

are there any PHD's on here who don't refer to themselves as doctors? I feel like the profs who don't are generally less dickish

No, but to me it's more about consistency in use of the term and not about the level of required training to achieve a PhD or JD. When someone yells in an emergency "is anyone here a doctor?!" they aren't talking to the guy with the PhD in Economics (though I'm sure he's a very smart individual).

But that is a really dumb reason to tell a doctor they cannot use the term, and pretty insulting to those of us that have the degree. Just because I may use the title Doctor does not mean I put my hand up in a medical emergency. Come to think of it, I have never heard of a colleague doing it either. Hell I have a t-shirt I wear with regularity that says "not that kind of doctor". I am in a medical field (pathology), took some of the same courses as M.D.s, and at best I would provide my advice without saying "Yes I am a doctor so stand aside and let me treat them". Ph.D.s are well aware of what type of doctors we are, so you can rest easier.

This board of a reflection of society in the sense that the least educated tend to be the biggest know-it-alls.

Now lets say you and I go toe-to-toe on Bird Law and see who comes out the victor.
