Rick Barnes to Wake?

Who do people opposed to Barnes think we can get? Shaka Smart is not taking the Wake job. Even if he is inclined to leave VCU, he can do WAY better.

Actually with Shaka, he could have one recruiting year and put us in the Top 20 or beyond. If he gets Giles (who likes Wake and is local), Shaka makes us Top 10.

There are lots of positives for Shaka at Wake.

Will one of you guys win the lottery and gift Wake 50-100 mil so we can get Shaka?

This is dumb. Rick Barnes will not be our next coach no matter what.

This.

It's making to chuckle to see people get so worked up about a thing that is just not going to happen.

I find it really funny that people on here honestly believe that buzz will be gone after the season. Haven't you idiots learned anything about his butt buddy/ boss Ron Wellman in the last 4 years?

A few thoughts. First, Barnes is a tough guy and teaches defense well. In this respect, he's a lot like Odom and the opposite of Skip. He insists on effort and defense from every player, and if he doesn't get it, that player won't get on the floor. But his offenses are often incredibly challenged when it comes to halfcourt play. Unless he has a Durant or TJ Ford, his halfcourt sets can look significantly worse than Odom's.

Second, his tenure at Tejas was great when Frank Haith was his #1 assistant and main recruiter. Recruiting (and halfcourt O for that matter) have fallen way off the last several years. Especially with his age, he could be a head coach who is good as his assistants help make him. Similar situation here in Cville where Gillen was fine when Bobby Gonzalez and Tommy Herrion were here, but things went south after they left for their own HC opportunities. At this point in his career, I'd be a tad worried about what I'd be getting. Which is why it might be important from a recruiting and offensive perspective to keep Battle on if we were to hire Barnes.

Third, I agree with the others that our other options may be limited, and Barnes as a 5-6 year gap bridger may be a decent idea and as good as we can do. He's not a long term solution, but if he could get us back to post-season play and respectability, that would put us in a better position to hire a great candidate as his replacement.

Fourth, I also agree with the others that Rick is a feisty guy and his own man. I can't see him getting along with Ron or Ron wanting to hire him. I therefore don't see this as being in the cards. Yet another reason why Ron Wellman shouldn't be the person to make the next hire. Buzzdick out, Wellman out and Hatch out.

LOWF again...if have the money for Barnes for 5-6 years, we can afford to hire anyone who could be available.

Going for a "stop gap" will kill our program. Plus Barnes has lost it.

Can we please change the thread title to something like "DBR column: Barnes and Wake a possible fit?" I keep logging back onto the boards and getting irrationally excited every time I see "Rick Barnes to Wake?" staring me in the face.

Its ok to dream, but is anyone else scared of going to bed tonight and having dreams of a Geico Duck, Rick Barnes threesome?

Barnes has missed the NCAA once since 1995. The idea that he would kill our program is amusing. He is a big name. We would get quite a bit of publicity and a recruiting bump out of the hire.

There is zero chance Wellman would hire Barnes. He will no sooner hire Barnes than Calipari, Lavin, or Pearl.

If Wellman ends up making the next mens' basketball hire, the odds are about even that you will have never before heard of the person prior to the press conference.

Agree with you and that is why he can't make the next hire.

Not hearing of [Redacted] has really worked out well for us, huh?

Then what the hell, why settle for Barnes or even Shaka? Why not go get Phil Jackson? I hear he's available.

Phil Jackson isn't an ex con. He is not a good fit

I don't think Ron is going to hire the guy in the NCAA tournament that was Dino's last victory.

Well, I've been down so Goddamn long
That it looks like up to me
