A few thoughts. First, Barnes is a tough guy and teaches defense well. In this respect, he's a lot like Odom and the opposite of Skip. He insists on effort and defense from every player, and if he doesn't get it, that player won't get on the floor. But his offenses are often incredibly challenged when it comes to halfcourt play. Unless he has a Durant or TJ Ford, his halfcourt sets can look significantly worse than Odom's.
Second, his tenure at Tejas was great when Frank Haith was his #1 assistant and main recruiter. Recruiting (and halfcourt O for that matter) have fallen way off the last several years. Especially with his age, he could be a head coach who is good as his assistants help make him. Similar situation here in Cville where Gillen was fine when Bobby Gonzalez and Tommy Herrion were here, but things went south after they left for their own HC opportunities. At this point in his career, I'd be a tad worried about what I'd be getting. Which is why it might be important from a recruiting and offensive perspective to keep Battle on if we were to hire Barnes.
Third, I agree with the others that our other options may be limited, and Barnes as a 5-6 year gap bridger may be a decent idea and as good as we can do. He's not a long term solution, but if he could get us back to post-season play and respectability, that would put us in a better position to hire a great candidate as his replacement.
Fourth, I also agree with the others that Rick is a feisty guy and his own man. I can't see him getting along with Ron or Ron wanting to hire him. I therefore don't see this as being in the cards. Yet another reason why Ron Wellman shouldn't be the person to make the next hire. Buzzdick out, Wellman out and Hatch out.
