MTOW, Dan's Latest With Grobe

I agree with Dan's point. If Grobe had continued to win ACC championships the fan base would be happy.

Dan might need to go a touch deeper than that with his Wake football analysis.

I do think its pretty much uniformly been an O-Line issue for the past 4-5 years.

FIFY

I'm sorry but Grobe's "being patience and conservative and loyal helped us win the ACC that one season" quotes are beyond outdated. Either adapt to the current landscape of college football, and once again run an offense that's innovative and plays to our strengths, or get out of the game.

And as I watched Duke win it's ninth game of the season, I saw a coach leading them, David Cutcliffe, who is so much like Grobe in that regard. I didn't see any headphones flying. I didn't see any sideline histronics. What I saw was a professional going about his business the best way he knew how.

You should have also noticed that Cutcliffe is actually involved in the game, interacting with coaches and players. Grobe, not so much.

Grobe only trying to protect that $2M+ annuity Wake is providing...CYA!

"I really think the best thing you can do is really not try to build up enthusiasm,'' Grobe said.

I don't really get this whole thing. What type of enthusiasm is Dan talking about, and what is Grobe talking about? The type of enthusiasm that Wellman and Grobe infused into the fanbase prior to the season? Yeah, because the fanbase doesn't have that right now. But it seems like Grobe isn't answering that question, because he's saying that it's not a good thing to get the players pumped up about an upcoming season, because they'll only be disappointed with the results that he has been yielding the past five years.

From a coach's perspective, which is worse: enthusiasm coming into a season with no results to show for it, or a fanbase so unenthusiastic (read: apathetic) that the lack of results comes to nobody's surprise?

Either way, this is 100% on Grobe. It's one thing if the coach isn't showing any enthusiasm during games -- Dan makes a valid point that it wasn't that big a deal in 2006 -- but if the kids aren't pumped up, then how can he or anybody expect results?

There are more issues than just the O line. With one notable exception, this is the worst group of skill players I can remember.

Did he really say that? Holy shit. Isn't enthusiasm good? What in the world is going on

Dan says that Grobe acknowledged recruiting was a problem but I don't see it. I see player blaming and "whatever the reason" but not "we did a poor job recruiting."

I think it has been play calling. Of course you can't run if you only do so sporadically. We haven't let our running backs get into a rhythm. Harris averaged 3.7 per carry for the season but only carried the ball 118 times. The erratic play calling hurt us more than the offensive line.

3.7 per carry is pretty bad, isn't it?

Not bad, not great, but not bad. An average of 4 yards or better is considered pretty good. He really only had one longish run that can remember so the average isn't skewed by a few long runs. To me the problem is evident, our offense has under performed for several years and there's been different players, different schemes, even a few different offensive position coaches, yet one Offensive Coordinator.

"At some point you’ve just got to bow your neck and blow a couple of snot bubbles and say `We ain’t losing anymore.’ ''

There's an old but very good saying that addresses this crap....

You can whip a mule for the entire length of the Kentucky Derby and it's still going to finish last.

I would suggest we work smarter in our recruiting, have fewer "mules" and find some thoroughbreds to compete in the ACC.

Yeah, I guess that is pretty bad. Maybe I was thinking more in NFL terms, isn't 4 yards a carry considered decent for an NFL back?
