While its fun to play expert here, at one time, the vast majority of posters on a predecessor of this board begged WF to hire John Pelphrey as WF's basketball coach. In retrospect, not such a hot idea as Pelphrey is a 45 year-old assistant at Florida, after Arkansas fired him in 2011 following 4 uneventful years there.

No idea who WF's next head coach will be, but predicting who will be successful is not so easy. Looked like Kansas made a good hire with Turner Gill. Looked like USF made a good hire with Skip Holtz. Looked like UVA made a good hire with Mike London. Looked like WV made a good hire with Dana Holgerson.

It's fun to banter about names, but winning in college football is really hard. Every BCS schools spends a bundle of cash, and hires coaches with really good resumes and really good connections, but for every winner there is a loser, and not every hire is going to be able to overcome the disadvantages that face WF football.

This is a NO LOWF ZONE. GTFO with this nonsense.

I'm sure an exhaustive 36 hour search will occur and some guy with about a 20-60 record and tons of character will emerge. I have zero faith Wellman will hire a Narduzzi. None.

This is the sad truth. Prepare for the worst and you won't be disappointed.

Let's say Ron makes an A+ hire that everyone LOVES....how much heat does that take off of his own ass?

At this point I'm so jaded that I found myself thinking that RW threw Grobe under the bus to give himself enough wiggle room so he could give his buddy Buzz an extension. Of course that means he will have to also make a popular hire to replace Grobe so at least there's that...

This isn't 2001 anymore. Grobe laid a foundation that another coach can improve upon despite the past five seasons.

Pilch, stop taking pot shots at the fanbase. We should be unified now. Thankful for what Grobe did for our university and hopeful that we will get a quality new coach. Bury the hatchet and move on.

Ron can't afford to screw this up. He's on very shaky ground as it is.

Agree. He is going to play this one very conservatively. He was so cocky after Grobe/Prosser and thought he could do no wrong and we ended up with Bz. Don't see him taking a flier this time

Wellman is going after Chizik. That's what I heard.

Time to go, Ron. You've have a great run. Follow a fine example and please don't be the last to know.

Not if he gives the extension while the job is vacant to "have at least one coach locked in" for recruiting and while he still has a winning record. (i.e. before conference play).

But glad I wasn't the only one to think this in a dark place in my heart..

Seriously. What an awful post. No one in their right mind--which, granted, would exempt a few folks around here--would criticize Wellman for hiring a Lembo or Narduzzi-type candidate who didn't work out. What they (we) are afraid of is him going off the damn reservation, again, and hiring some 60-year-old retread with no track record of success, no personality, and no promise of hope.

That last is what we, as a fanbase, need right now, more than anything. We've been through five years of losing football games due to the most obvious of deficiencies and in the most predictable of fashions, and three-plus years of watching the worst coach in the country destroy our basketball program, all while a tone deaf AD rains sunshine and platitudes--"Oh heavens no!" "I couldn't be happier!"--down on us. There's been no hope of any real success in either sport, no hope that the current regimes were going to correct their mistakes, and no hope that the AD was going to step in.

Hire the right guy, and that all changes. Yes, it's hard to win in college football, and harder at Wake Forest. No shit. We're not asking for Ron to look into his crystal ball and conjure up the name of the one coach in the country who will have the most possible success here. All we want is somebody who's qualified, who's had success, and who can, finally, give us some cause for optimism with regard to one of our two revenue sports. That's all "don't screw this up" means.
