St. Bonaventure Game Thread - Deacs win 77-62 off to 9-2 start

A couple of years ago after a few games where poor player substitution and shot selection was thrown out as "proof" Bz was a horrible coach, I made the comment that Wellman told Bz he didn't have to win at the beginning of his tenure and IMO Bz was using games to coach more so than winning. He was letting all of his players get experience at key points of the game. I suggested that once Bz got a handle on his recruits ability, we'd see much better substitutions, shot selection adjustments, etc...in game coaching....that's when we'd see his ability to actually coach. That was scoffed at by a lot of people but it sounds like I may not have been far off. Glad to hear things are coming together. Bz may never have a personality a lot of people here like, but he may..may...just be able to coach a hell of a lot better than people thought.

I'm not willing to wait any longer to find out. Get rid of the clown.

Went to the game. We were really bad in the first half, most of it likely coming from the rust of the 10 day layoff. The second half was as well as I've seen Wake play basketball for 20 minutes against a decent opponent in five years. I'm not sure how many people who watched the game on ESPN3 noticed the vocal St. Bonaventure contingent sitting near the students. They started a couple chants in the mid-to-late the first half that actually backfired because it sparked the notoriously muted Wake fans. The second half became an ACC game-like atmosphere that was a lot of fun to experience in December with few students in attendance.

It looked like there were 6 students at the game. The student section is now the bottom half of two sections, and last night one of those sections was some high school band. The group of Bonnies was very vocal in the first half. The 20-25 of them were louder than the rest of the arena. Thankfully they didn't have anything to cheer about in the 2nd half.

We always used to say that in recruiting if you are explaining you are losing. Any possible Bz possible has to be followed up with an explanation. Think about it. Coaching ability (requires explanation)...recruiting ability (requires explanation)...PR ability (no explanation, just plain terrible). In four years we can count on 1 hand the number of significant wins we have. We can count on ZERO hands the number of recruits that we signed who were above our supposed pay grade. Devin, CMM, and Mitchell are probably our three highest rated recruits, and while all three might end up being good players, none of them were recruiting coups.

The only way to justify Bz's existence as our coach is to explain, and when you are explaining you are losing.

After careful thought and reading of these boards, it seems to me that [Redacted] lacks the same charm and charisma that Skip Prosser had. Especially when it comes to engaging students.

Is that a fair assessment?

Boy I'm telling ya, every time ESPN showed Bz on camera last night he just looked absolutely miserable. I wish I had the skills to go back and review the game and splice together these images. And it's just downright painful to watch him go through the post game handshake line. Last night was no exception. I mean he just looks like a man that his going through the motions.

Beating St. Bonaventure at home, big deal...God we've fallen

Sorry to be Debbie Downer but REALLY?!?!?!? This OOC schedule is a joke, absolutely embarrassing.

Eh, I predicted preseason that our OOC schedule was "too, too easy." Maybe I didn't "know" but I damn sure thought it'd go down like this.

We have played at least 5 good teams: Kansas, USC, UT, Richmond and St Bon. We are 3-2 against them. Last season I could see us 0-5 against those same teams. There is improvement. How much improvement (?) we will know soon enough.

Captain of the under statement, do I promote you.

St. Bonaventure is a fine OOC opponent. Tulane, Jacksonville, Citadel, etc. are not.

C'mon, we're four years in and he's over 60. How much more data do we need to make a fair assessment? Especially when so many here knew from the very first moment of his hire that he just didn't have what it would take to lead Wake to new heights, or even historically competitve ones. The very first moment of his hire.

Ironically, this is a very good explanation.

Relevant teams with non-conference schedules just as bad as ours (ranked worse than #300)

GaTech
Louisville
Clemson
Wake Forest
NC State
Purdue
VaTech
Missouri
UCLA
Pitt

Our schedule has been easy, but if we're an embarrassment then lots of other teams are as well, including #4 Louisville. This is without Xavier factored in. I mean, congrats to Boston College for scheduling tough opponents out of conference for a 4-7 start. Great move. This team needed some minutes for Andre and I think the schedule has paid off so far.

The hammer is coming. The only ranked ACC team we don't play twice is Syracuse.
