Wake County Schools Delayed Two Hours on 1/7/2014 because it is...

#science says it freezes every time it gets below 32, which happened twice this week, each time without delay.

If I wanted an opinion worth having, I probably should have asked a real doctor.

actually, #science would give the reasons why things don't automatically freeze as soon as it hits 32.

This is absurd. I hate to play the "things weren't like this in my day card", but come on. I grew up in NJ and never missed a day of school because it was cold. Snow and ice, yes. But just cold?

This is all about liability.

...isn't that all it's ever about?
also, even in Jersey I don't think it routinely dips below zero. Not below freezing, but below zero.

Of course it does not routinely dip below zero in NJ. But it is routinely cold there in the winter. And I don't ever remember a day when school was cancelled because it was cold.

Sure. Again, we've never had cold weather before. This is the very first time it's ever been below 72 in North Carolina. I'm as excited as the rest of you.

I'm pretty sure that tomorrow is supposed to be the coldest weather on record in the triad tomorrow. Keep fucking that chicken, jhmd.

Most NC counties are dry tonight. It's going to be cold as hell, no doubt about it, but there's not going to be any ice on the roads in many of these counties that are closing. I don't know - I like the idea of being able to look at my kids tomorrow and say, "It's shitty out there but the world is still spinning. Go learn something." The fact of the matter is schools used to open on days like tomorrow. Things are different and I'm not sure that's always a good thing. When the going gets tough, do something else? When it's super cold, stay home? How about when it's cold, wear three pairs of pants, five sweatshirts, socks on your hands and a towel around your head and go for it? Give them something to talk about in a few years.

WSFCS is going to drop any minute now. The note about buying time re: buses starting versus just closing makes sense. But if you're delaying solely based on temps, well, it's going to be 7 at 7am and 9 at 9am - it's cold either way.

It's getting harder and harder to teach your kids to adapt/overcome/improvise (I love me some Heartbreak Ridge) to the world around them.

well you can always just send them off to war to toughen em up.

My friend from Buffalo said they closed more often due to cold weather than snow.

Which would matter if I lived there. Cluck, cluck.

Forsyth still on. Guilford is 2hr delay.

and if it snowed 5 inches in buffalo it wouldnt close either. does that mean it shouldnt close anywhere for that? this is such a dumb thing to get up in arms about.

Great point. It's easier for a place like Buffalo to deal with five inches of snow than it is twenty below zero.

Nobody is actually up in arms about it. It's just an odd thing to delay school because of "cold" weather, when two hours isn't going to make a meaningful difference. 2-3 degrees at most.
