It never ceases to amaze me that after a fairly well played win that the game thread devolves into a giant pissing contest, I guess this will stop next year.
Do you guys realize how bad off Dino's last class was? If you really expected us to win with Chennault, JT, Derosiers, and Tabb, you can continue to maintain that the first two years should have been better. (Chennault was 3-stars but I believe the others were 4-stars.) But if you want to be realistic, go ahead and check out what those guys are doing now. There is really only one inescapable conclusion - we weren't going to win with those guys as our primary players.
Ruffian is a pretty bitchin word.
So if thug becomes the new N-word, we go to using the word ruffian until it becomes racist?
I'm certainly not saying Sherman IS a thug and I don't really care one way or the other. But he acts like an asshole on the field with his taunting, shit-talking etc. You can certainly threaten and hurt people without using violence, but then again, football tends to be a violent game.
Anyway, the point is the media would like you to believe that now it is totally and absolutely true that anyway who has referred to someone as a 'thug' or thuggish is most certainly racist or bigoted. If Mr. Sherman's feelings have been hurt by fellow players or fans who call him names, you reap what you sow generally. A little bit of humility goes a long way IMO.
Hell, the media used the word thug pretty liberally on Monday, in part leading Sherman to make his comments.
Again, if Sherman is the standard for thug and it is not a racial term I'm sure you can find plenty of examples of people calling brash, non-violent white players thugs out there.
Do you realize that playing for a coach who they obviously didn't fit with probably had something to do with that. Even then they weren't as bad as people make them out to be.
Dino's last class took up 8 scholarship through its first two seasons (5 the first year, 3 the second year). They contributed 7.9 win shares during that time.
That's .99 WS/Scholarship
Through last night's game (19 of 31) [Redacted]'s signature class has taken up 11.3 scholarships (pro-rating this year). They have contributed 12.7 win shares during that time.
1.12 WS/Scholarship
For a comparison (Through 2 seasons) the following classes:
Buzz's first class: .28 WS/scholarship
Ish's class: 1.23 WS/Scholarship
Teague/Johnson: 3.23 WS/Scholarship
JGray/Big E: 1.41 WS/Scholarship
The definition of ruffian- a strong and violent person (especially a man) who threatens and hurts other people.
Honest question, have you ever called a white brash player a thug? I've never heard Larry Bird, JJ Redick, or Philip Rivers a thug.
I can't believe that people are trying to deny that SOME white guys throw around the word "thug" as a disguise for them really wanting to drop the N-bomb. It's just so obvious to me.
boorish ruffian is better than ruffian
Sure you've got some bigots out there that might use it as a replacement, of course a lot of those probably just use the N-word itself. Cracker can have a racist meaning, but I'd say the majority of the time a person uses the word cracker they're talking about the kind you eat.
Good point, and the answer is no off the top of my head. Though you do hear overly physical white guys who engage in dirty play as thugs. But yeah, seems that black trash talkers get that moniker, while white trash talkers do not - I think they get referred to more often as assholes. So it would be more appropriate to call Sherman an asshat or asshole for his onfield conduct (though he certainly seems like an interesting guy off the field). FWIW, I saw his interview the other day on ESPN, and I loved his comments about not being able to talk trash to Fitzgerald because Fitzgerald was always complimenting him.
Sherm has had his 15 minutes, time to move on.
Yeah, but if they call a person a cracker I don't think they mean a delicious wheat tray that you eat with cheese on top. They mean some racist shit.
