The Future of Ukraine

Not really Butthead! Hitler remilitarized the Rhineland five months before hosting the Olympic games in Berlin.

Good point. Well presented.

Hitler at least waited for two weeks after hosting the winter Olympics to start invading other countries.

ETA - I didn't realize that the winter and summer Olympics occurred during the same year until the early 90's.

The 1936 Winter Olympics were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. Germany also hosted the Summer Olympics the same year in Berlin. 1936 is the last year in which the Summer and Winter Games were both held in the same country (the cancelled 1940 games would have been held in Japan, with that country likewise hosting the Winter and Summer games).

Huh? How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? It was a huge deal when the switch was made to start alternating every 2 years.

So, some assholes on the radio just said Sarah Palin called this Ukraine adventure in 2008?

That would suck, if true.

I was in high school trying to get laid and figure out how to get beer in 1992. Don't remember it being a big deal regardless.

So the "I told you" tour has started. Which FNC shows should we expect to see her on tonight? $10 says it's Hannity.

I remember way back in the olden days of 2012 when Romney called Russia our number one geopolitical foe and was basically hooted down by the intelligentsia for being stuck in a Cold War mentality. Oops. Looks like Mitt may have been right again...

You mean like when he said 47% of Americans are mooches and should be written off? Those vets and seniors (who paid into the system) are a huge number of that 47%.

You mean like how Mitt supported the scam of trickle down economics?

It's now up to the Europeans top take the World Cup away from Russia. They should do it this week.

We should throw Russia out of the G8.

Romney was right though. Russia was and is our largest geopolitical foe. I think Obama probably knew that at the time as well, but thought he could score some cute political points with his 'the 80's wants their foreign policy back' bit. Its either Russia or China, and Russia has been much more aggressive in recent history.

No he's not. Russia is not a threat to the US, Europe or Asia. Even with crazy Putin they aren't close to being the threat jihadism is. They aren't a threat to our economy like China is.

As someone who loves to get ahead of himself, I can't help but see the geopolitical and historical parallels between Putin's Russia and Hitler's Germany.

The Hitler-Putin comparison is hysterical and silly. Hitler was reckless, Putin is cautious and pragmatic. Radical nationalists are more influential in the current Ukrainian government, than in the Russian. Putin is pursuing Russian national interest, and he holds the cards in this situation. No one can or will prevent him from eventually detaching parts of the current Ukraine, and in any event the borders of Ukraine have been pretty elastic through the centuries and are certainly not etched in stone. The areas slated for detachment have heavily Russian populations. That fact is difficult to ignore, especially if you believe in democracy. Putin is not threatening anyone's national interests - save perhaps those of the poor hapless Ukrainians' - anyway.

Czechoslovakia, Austria and Poland all had heavy German populations and had recently been part of the former Germanic empire. I'm not saying that we're headed to WWIII because of it, but Putin's actions along with his rational for them is quite similar to Hitler's. Lets not forget about his actions in Georgia a couple years ago.

An authoritarian empire collapsed, to be replaced by a weak government who tried to move away from their former governmental model, who was then followed by a strongman who's #1 goal was to return that nation to their former military and territorial glory.

Sounds familiar.
