Our Next BB Coach or #MannUp + other coach talk

Menzies is one of the few names I've seen on here that I am not very familiar with. What is his background?

He was a long-time assistant before taking over at NMSU. His downside is that he seems like a lifetime west coaster, but he has a lot of experience assisting and recruiting, under a diverse set of great coaches. It looks like his big break was as an assistant on Steve Fisher's staff at SDSU, when Fisher first took over there in 1999. He spent four years under Fisher, then a year under Henry Bibby at USC, then a couple of years under Lon Kruger at UNLV, then two years under Pitino at Louisville. He was then hired at NMSU to take over for Reggie Theus when Theus left for the Kings. He's taken NMSU to 4 NCAATs (assuming a win tonight) in 5 years. This is his 7th season with the Aggies, with yearly KP ratings of 112, 133, 102, 144, 64, 86, 79. The year before he was hired, NMSU was 95th.

His connection with Theus is interesting-- he also replaced Theus on Pitino's staff at Louisville, when Theus left for NMSU.

It's hard to draw any conclusions about Menzies' style. It looks like his teams have run average to below-average tempos the last two years. When they hit #64 in KP three years ago, though, they had the 22nd fastest tempo in the country; they were also well above average in pace from 2008-2011. I don't know if he's tried to slow things down in recent years, but he's had some great offensive teams at NMSU, so I wouldn't worry too much about change of pace. He's shown that his teams can score efficiently whether he's running fast or slow. His defenses have been all over the place, though (nothing too awful in terms of floor, don't worry).

I just noticed the Howland and Masiello avatars are kind of similar.

I like Menzies actually. He'd be a good hire for a decent Mountain West program or lower Pac-12 job in the near future. I bet he gets that chance.

Last night I was hanging out with some friends. There were a couple of local coaches and another guy who has been around the game for decades. None had much positive to say about Howland.

Another had a childhood friend who works at Pitt. His friend told him Jamie Dixon's job may have been on the line last night. He said he's not completely out of the woods yet. He said there were rumblings about his lack of postseason success.

Did you tell them they need to get over their petty jealousy?

Jamie Dixon's job might be in jeopardy? Who does Pitt think they are?? Fuck them.

If Pitt fires Dixon, Wake should immediately hire him.

If by some chance Pitt wins today, he's totally safe. If they lose, there will be some nervous nights until they play their first game in The Dance.

The guy said getting to the semis did help a lot.

You make assumptions about people you don't know. That's such a good idea.
