Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Now the Kenny Beck scoop shows how careful his source was with wording.

Beck said Manning was not on campus today or yesterday, and "a hire is not imminent"

Whoever we end up with I hope we can support him from the beginning- none of us are probably going to be completely happy- but there is a lot to be said for an up and coming young energetic coach. They will need a chance. Then turn on them if you like/if it is warranted. Fact of the matter is we are not a first tier job- never were- but we need a guy to get us back to where we were- close to that first tier. We do not have much left in the well for the new guy to work with. This is the reality. If it turns out to be Manning I think he has a big upside potentially. It just makes one skittish thinking Ron can redeem himself after the way he mishandled/judged events following Skip's death. No matter what Wellman did Shaka or the other "big names" were not coming here- that has been delusional all along. Shaka turned down better overtures. As hard as it might be, we need to love the guy we get to give him a chance. No one on this board is an athletic director and no one knows who was available and who was not. Wishing don't make it so. We get the right young guy and we will be set for years.

Shaka hasn't said no yet. We have been balls to the wall after him the past couple of weeks. He's dragging his feet and we needed a contingency plan. There is still a small chance Shaka has a revelation and becomes our coach. A Very small chance.

So he's thinking about filing divorce papers??

I'm joking!!

It does seem weird that Ron is okay with one of his "finalists" to be so loose-lipped in the press when he really likes to keep things on the DL. Did Lembo's peeps leak this much? I can't remember. Obviously, Clawson was lurking in the shadows.

Uh, no. LOWF is claiming that WF can't compete for titles because it's WF.

Claiming that we can't compete for titles because the university administration, athletic department, donors, and coaches are inept is not LOWF. That's just the truth. Better management = athletic success. Bringing in Danny Manning is not going to counteract the path we've been put on.
That is so true. I think Clawson is the best thing to happen to Wake. I'm all in on getting football tickets again. Manning is another story. I' ll wait and see how it goes. Good luck to him he will need it.

I don't necessarily know that there are similarities in the hire, as much as the process.

The last one we had pretty high hopes on because insiders alleged we were pursuing Izzo and Donovan as top targets. I think we all now know that they quickly expressed limited interest. Next on the list appeared to be he who shall not be named, who we wooed and chatted with for a couple days before Goodman said he was likely to be named the head coach after the weekend. He who shall not be named had a track record, and it was bad.

This time we offered Shaka and as far as we know he hasn't responded. There were very real and meaningful talks. We apparently also offered Archie but he turned it down - not entirely surprising. Manning now pops up and has some experience as an assistant and two years as a head coach. He doesn't have much of a track record at all.

What are the similarities between he who shall not be named and Manning as coaches? I can't think of any.

I'm not sure anyone crushed the Bzz hire more than me on the Scout board. Older posters will remember. Several sunshine posters actually tried to get me kicked out of premium. This is not the same thing, hiring Manning, and if you can't see that, I honestly don't know what to say.

There's nothing to say about a number of posters here.

Some can't understand the difference between, "I coached Carmelo for one year." and "I was the #1 player in the country, the NPOY, the Wooden Award winner and have been an assistant for a National Championship team."

Arlington, it's much like these lines form As Good as It Gets:

"Receptionist: How do you write women so well?
Melvin Udall: I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability."

it looks like danny manning was ejected twice this year (vs. maryland in december and ucla in the tourney). so i guess he has some fire?
That's actually good to know. I was a bit worried because he's so laid back.

Trashing or blaming Maya Smart is pretty petty IMO. She'd go if Shaka really thought he should be here.

Yep it was classless, but sadly predictable form the assholes who did it.

It was stupid, childish and could do nothing but harm. But they are internet tough guys.

It really makes no sense that people would have been all over Michael White's nuts but are apoplectic over Danny Manning. Manning won out with a younger team. He was his conference's COY over Michael White. He went to the Dance (in his 2nd year) not Michael White. I think both coaches are potential up-and-comers, but for people to be excited about Michael White but think Danny Manning is the worst hire possible is just wrong.

We went for Shaka, apparently as hard as we could. He was the #1 choice. He's turned down other schools before Wake. He strongly considered the Wake job. Give it a rest people.

If Manning re-ups with Tulsa we will truly be at rock bottom. I think he will sign. It is a huge step up for him, and he eventually wants to replace Self at Kansas. The only way he gets there is if he takes this kind of job. There is a lot of wins to be had at Wake Forest, and he can make a ton of money doing it.

It is quite ironic that we have had ZERO information for the past 2 weeks, and now the Manning info is leaked BEFORE he signs, thus putting us in the worst possible scenario for embarrassment.

I understand this line of thinking, but due to his time in the NBA, Danny Manning is only 3.5 years younger than Bill Self - unless Self suddenly starts sucking or retires at a young age, I don't see this as being a realistic possibility.

But it's the perfect deflection for the OWGs Wellman has to deal with. "I did all I could, but that young independent female, she wouldn't listen to reason! Because of her emotions!"

Awe we ever going to hear a formal announcement from the VCU side on this?

Can somebody repost the mockup of the Danny Manning billboard done by apetit or appreciateit?

Who are all of these lurkers making the same tired "give him a chance, he might surprise you" arguments that were made 4 years ago?

Never made that argument 4 years ago. I met [Redacted] shortly after he was hired and knew it would be a disaster. Not a people person is an understatement. This is Danny freakin' Manning. That gets his foot in the door with all recruits. He is a good guy and a people person. He also knows basketball. The best thing Manning can do is put an experienced assistant head coach (with head coaching experience) as his #1 assistant. Having Childress on staff would be huge as well.

Manning did well at his brief stint at Tulsa showing significant improvement year 1 to year 2. Into the NCAA, conference champions, etc.

I'd wager that 90+% of the people pissed about Manning would have been pissed about MW.
