Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

I didn't invent the term. I just understand what it means.

I too am struggling to understand just when LOWF changed from saying "it can't be done" to "we didn't." There's a big difference between taking the position that Wake won't ever be able to compete with [School X,Y, or Z] and that we should just be happy having nice uniforms to wear, versus accepting that [Superstar Coach X] didn't want our job so we should support the guy we got.

At its most basic, LOWF essentially stands for noting that Wake Forest is one of the, if not the, smallest schools in Division 1A/BCS and has rigorous academics, and therefore cannot be expected to win on a consistent basis. All other characterizations of LOWF derive from this basic tenet.

"Ok, so you said that you like this car because it goes from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. But what if it didn't get from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, would you like the car less at that point?"

Just a terrible question. Don't go into market research.

So you'd hire Alan Smith?

And his excellent recruiting class coming in. Didn't realize he had 4 Top 100 (ESPN) players coming in. He must be pretty stoked about that I would think. We may have made him second-guess himself a little bit though, and it's nice to think we at least got him to give serious consideration to LOWF. Alas, timing is everything. Different AD, different outcome? Maybe we can all agree on that right now.

Shaka's still got an hour or so to change his mind!

I'll find some way of justifying this hire to myself before the fall. Hell, I was #BuzzIn for a time.

But, I'm really just kind of bummed about this hire right now.

Somebody, please sell me on this without resorting to the same rhetoric that the AD fucks used when they forced [name redacted] down our throats. Just spare me that.

I tell you what. I'm going to stop complaining. Danny Manning offers one thing that we haven't had at our program for 40 years now. HOPE.

Yes, his resume isn't as long as we expected it to be and his name doesn't have the gravitas of Smart, or Marshall, or Howland. He has spent some time in the NBA, and our future recruits will want to have a coach that knows what it takes to play at that level. That's a plus.

Let's all agree to disagree with Wellman on the hire now, but support our new coach and the team - if only because he's not Jeff fucking [Redacted]. Wellman is going to retire soon, and if Manning doesn't work out, Wellman's replacement will surely do a better job with the coaching search.

Good luck Coach Manning, you're going to need it.

Exactly. So whether our new head coach is Shaka Smart, Danny Manning, or Peyton Manning, he should be expected to win on a consistent basis. That isn't changing.

Right. But as KidA pointed out, connecting that to "We didn't get the guy I wanted, fuck everything and anyone who disagrees with me" is misguided at best, evidence of a #filth education at worst.

"He coached Carmelo! X's and O's! He had Air Force as a contender!"

That's where most people were in the summer of 2010. People weren't completely sure that his time in Colorado was indicative of how he'd perform here until Stetson set us on our path toward misery.

I don't know why people act like [redacted] coaching the Nugs for 2 seasons was such an accomplishment. For 1. He got fired after 2 seasons. 2. He didn't win the job, he was already an assistant coach on the team and got bumped up because he was butt buddies with the GM. Fuck [redacted], and fuck the people who supported his hiring.

Contrary to the [name redacted] hiring, you're supposed to have credentials before you get hired to an ACC job. Like it or not, Manning's look a lot like [name redacted]'s. There's no way around that:

-Great credentials in an area that may or may not translate (NBA coaching expertise & one of the greatest college basketball players)
-success at a mid-major but without much of a sample size to qualify said success (Air Force & Tulsa)
-lots of mental gymnastics and speculation about recruiting (i.e. "he might have recruited Andre Roberson!" & "he might have recruited Xavier Henry!")
-the durable: "at worst he'll be average!"
-and finally "he'll be able to coach up our x-position!" (yep, that was one of [name redacted]'s strengths supposedly, too)

No reason to get excited about the basketball hire = no hope.

He'll do at least average? WTF happened to this fanbase.

Whatever y'alls psychiatrists are giving you - I want some.

Manning inherited a practically blank roster in year 1 and they weren't very good playing 6 freshmen. In year 2, contrary to what you posted earlier, there was a ton of individual and team improvement to rise all the way up to 72nd KP w/ a team ranked 298 in experience.

There is a chance he is an amazing coach and is a savant to obtain results he achieved with the hand he was dealt at Tulsa. There is also a chance that he completely sucks. But we don't know he sucks. It would be impossible to know that from his Tulsa tenure.
