Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

I think it's a terrible hire. There's just not enough there to come to any firm conclusions. Of course I hope it works out. But I'm not gonna be an idiot and start trying to paint this as an acceptable hire.

How many coaches do you consider to be acceptable? Smart, Marshall and Howland?

They won their conference, as well as the last 11 games they played going into the NCAAT. More than decent for Tulsa, who hadn't been to the tourney in 11 years. We could do this all day, but ultimately until you start looking at his adj numbers and some advanced stats, the superficial stuff is not discouraging.

Townie, suddenly an "advanced stats" expert on DM. Did you watch a single Tulsa game this year?

The obvious fear is that someday he'll be a great coach, but he will have to make a lot of first-time head coach mistakes along the way. And he will make those mistakes at a school which cannot afford for them to be made. Ours.

That said, "hoping against hope," I'll be #ManUp from Day 1 until proven otherwise.

Actually, in retrospect, the AD will probably prefer us to say, "I will #ManUp from Day 1." As in, if we don't get on board, we're not Manning up. Clever, that.

It wasn't a straw man. Read the posts.

I disagree that Manning is an "objectively" bad hire for Wake Forest. That's an opinion. Many will hold the opposite one, and no one will be right until the future happens.

No one is basing anything solely off two years. Manning's history of non-stop success in many facets suggests he might continue to be successful in his next job. That's my subjective opinion, as valid as your. Cheers.

History of non-stop success? Do you even know what he did on the bench at Kansas, for how long and to what results? I don't. I don't think many do. The articles that OGB posted were inconclusive at best.

Your subjective opinion is fine, but you're stretching the evidence and it's disingenuous. If you think Manning is a good hire, then he's a good hire in spite of a resume with more holes than swiss cheese.

Comparing Manning to Bzz is pretty dumb IMO, Bzz had a terrible fucking record before he was hired, it was an obviously bad hire. Bzz didn't deserve Bzz-wait. Manning has virtually no HC experience and I don't approve of the hire, but if he is hired he deserves some patience.

"He coached Carmelo! X's and O's! He had Air Force as a contender!"

That's where most people were in the summer of 2010. People weren't completely sure that his time in Colorado was indicative of how he'd perform here until Stetson set us on our path toward misery.

Relatively speaking it would be a cushy fall considering his lucrative long-term contract with VCU.

And his excellent recruiting class coming in. Didn't realize he had 4 Top 100 (ESPN) players coming in. He must be pretty stoked about that I would think. We may have made him second-guess himself a little bit though, and it's nice to think we at least got him to give serious consideration to LOWF. Alas, timing is everything. Different AD, different outcome? Maybe we can all agree on that right now.

I find it a little difficult to kill the Manning hire (if it even happens) without knowing who we could've hired instead.

Ah, yes - the "we could have hired Russell Turner, so be happy proles!" line.

Fuck you, Ron Wellman.

I think a lot of us watched the conference championship game where he SCHOOLED Mikey White

Ugh, I took the loss in that game harder than any loss over the last four years of Wake ball.

yes, the final against LaTech, where I was cheering for Mike White

when i say advanced stats, all i really mean is KenPom

if you were throwing out legitimate arguments like strick, i might feel like discussing this further with you

Yep. And history has repeated itself. Many of the same dipshits who got behind the Bz hire are behind this one.

I know that a lot are not happy with this hire. I personally was hoping for Shaka and hoped Howland would be a legit candidate (clearly we wanted nothing to do with him.) It sucks but we may not have had a shot at either or they just didn't want to come here so now we are here with Danny Manning. I see a lot of people claiming it is a terrible hire. I am not going to sit here and say it is a great hire because until we actually see what happens under him or anyone else for that matter, it is all just speculation.

If he is our next coach, we need to get behind him and give him a shot. Yeah he only has 2 years HC experience but he has been successful. There is every bit a chance that he sucks but there is the same chance that he is a success. I mean look at Kevin Ollie. I know he inherited a much better situation at UCONN but the guy had 0 head coaching experience anywhere. Guy steps in for a legend and in his first year eligible for post season play, he gets them to the final 4. I am not saying this will happen but anything can happen. If we get a guy that is willing to work his tail off, you never know.

So what if Danny Manning were named Alan Smith, was 6 inches shorter, and never played in the NBA? Same exact coaching resume. Are we still OK with the hire?

"Ok, so you said that you like this car because it goes from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. But what if it didn't get from 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, would you like the car less at that point?"

Just a terrible question. Don't go into market research.
