The OFFICIAL 2014 Mother's Basement MLB Season Thread - #dynasty vs. #destiny

MASN and Time Warner Cable are never going to work out their dispute, are they? I will literally never see a baseball game featuring the Washington Nationals or Baltimore Orioles on television.

maybe the Comcast-Time Warner deal will move things along. :noidea:

Papelbon calls out teammates and coaches without calling them out:

"Obviously I don't know whether that's called for the bench or called from the middle infielders, but less than two outs I'm thinking ground ball and I'm thinking let's get this double play and go home," Papelbon said. "Obviously I'm not going to second-guess my teammates or my coach."

luls, buddy writes for this blog:

Haha, in addition to the death stare, he complained about the defensive alignment after the game. Dude faced seven batters and got one out. Yeah, I'm sure it's the defense's fault.

Also, his first two pitches to Donnie Murphy were at his head. Papelbon has no idea where the ball is going.

Tigs putting out Andrew Romine, career WAR 0.1 today at short LEGGO

The Matt Williams explanation for hitting Harper 6th is hilarious.

“One, I think it takes a little bit of pressure off of Bryce,” Williams said. “It allows him to use his legs, and I think that’s important, when he wants to use his legs. Now, we look at tonight as an example. [Mets starter Bartolo Colon] is really quick to the plate, so will there be opportunities to do that? You never know. But we want to give him the option to do. He’s a five-tool guy so he can beat that other team in many, many ways. We want to give him the opportunity to do that.
“Now, from a managers’ perspective you say ‘If I hit him second or third in front of Jayson [Werth] and [Ryan Zimmerman], do I really want him trying to steal second when we’re one swing away from a two-run homer or a three-run homer?’ That’s the logic. Most of all, I want him to be free and play and not have those boundaries on him. And I think, for me, over the long run he will drive in big runs for us.

Screw that, I'll just bring my own homemade cronuts if I want them that badly

Anyone ever been to an Iowa Cubs game? Thinking about driving up from KC to see Baez.

Never been - but heard the stadium is a really good minor league stadium. If you can, go when Hendricks or Ramirez are pitching - preferably Hendricks. You'll also get to see Alcantara, Szczur and Christian Villanueva - should be a solid team to watch.

If anyone is near Wilmington, DE you should go check out the Wilmington Blue Rocks. From Keith Law:

Wilmington Blue Rocks (Kansas City Royals, high Class A)

Top 100 prospects: SS Raul Mondesi Jr., RHP Miguel Almonte
Former top 100 guys: OF Bubba Starling
First-round picks: IF Hunter Dozier (2013), LHP Sean Manaea (2013), Starling (2011)
Other prospects of note: RHP Aroni Nina, C Zane Evans, C Cam Gallagher, RHP Christian Binford

I may be biased, but the team in my own backyard might just be the most loaded roster in all of minor league baseball. The Blue Rocks begin the season with two top-100 prospects, including the Royals' top three position player prospects and two of their top three arms after the injured Kyle Zimmer.

The rotation should be very strong with power from Almonte, deception (and a pretty good slider) from Manaea, and command from Binford. They'll have lots of athleticism up the middle, including former two-way player Evans, who also pitched at Georgia Tech, but will have to share catching duties with Gallagher, the Royals' second-round pick from 2011. Starling is the man under the microscope, however, coming off a lousy 2013 season in which the scouting reports were even more negative than the stat line.

Fun fact for the WS deacs: Wilmington plays against the WS Dash starting tonight. It's a 3 game home stand.

I think this is really interesting and wonder if it impacts how we view these new pitch framing studies. I get that you can have a large sample size when you are talking about 1 player where other variables can be isolated. But if we just take one catcher. He's catching 12 to 20 (or more) pitchers over 130-140 games. How many different umps are behind the plate?

Now we call into question the ump's ability to make the right call without bias. How do we have any confidence in pitch framing studies?
