• Welcome to OGBoards 10.0, keep in mind that we will be making LOTS of changes to smooth out the experience here and make it as close as possible functionally to the old software, but feel free to drop suggestions or requests in the Tech Support subforum!

Would you rather pay Manning $2M or pay a top assistant $900K to coach at Wake?

Would you rather?

What does the extra $1.5M do for me as a fan? I can't expect that money would be saved and used to overspend on a coach in the future?

I'd rather our school continue to show a commitment to winning by forking out money than save it for who knows what.

You don't set a terrible precedent. If Manning does well (and I believe anyone could for the next 2 years we will have a veteran roster) you have to compensate that. He is already showing he will peddle for pennies and if he gets offered anywhere else he will leverage us to death.

If he fails, a new coach comes in with more experience than Manning (who doesn't) and wants the 2mil plus some. No thanks.

Also if Shaka still has an offer he can accept here, whatever it is is greatly diminished by the fact that a guy with barely any experience is getting 2 million.

That's because I believe in my subjective opinion. You, however, believe your subjective opinion is objective, and it isn't.

Both of the names I mentioned would be considered to be high end position coaches as well as ace recruiters. I don't care whether or not someone was a top player, and Danny's head coaching experience, while better than no experience, hardly blows me out of the water.

Danny is a huge risk. You don't spend $2M on huge risks.

Rather, go out and get an elite assistant for $800-1000k.

Four years ago I'd probably be on board with you.

We cannot go for an assistant at this point. It wreaks of total desperation.

Add to that we have missed on other established coaches. To hire an assistant who has never been a D1 HC would be devastating to our brand.

P.S. I'd much rather have the assistants than Howland. You cannot overestimate how badly he's burned AAU bridges. I've talked to two HS coaches and someone who does AAU. Howland is poison for at least a couple more years. I'm not sure he can recover to be high D1 anytime soon.

Mich Assistant for 500K and let Thon Maker and Harry Giles split the leftover $1.5 million. #RogueOperation

Ha, you think this whole Danny Manning situation doesn't wreak of desperation? We supposedly offered a 2nd year head coach $2M and have him dragging us through the press.

Danny isn't an established coach, btw.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to WFU Lurker again.

You need to get off the $$. The number is relevant only to the conference.

We just can't take an assistant coach at this point.

Whether we spend $1.8M or $500K or $2.3M on a coach, we have all the money we need to recruit. It's total BS to think otherwise.

I'd much rather take my chances with Danny Manning coming into a recruits house than some no name assistant. If you don't see how much better this is for our program, you are blinded by ignorant hate.

Save your energy RJ. These people are off the deep end.

The numbers are irrelevant. The world knows we offered Shaka at least $3M. no self-respecting current coach is going take much less than $2M.

The fact that Tulsa has offered over $1.2M (and would likely go a little higher) is MORE to them than $2M is to a team in the ACC.

Dollar amounts are relative to your conference not the outside world.

You are off the deep end if you recognize that Danny is an extremely high risk proposition as his current head coaching experience consists of two years with another coach's recruits? [Redacted] had a stint where he put up pretty good results over two years with another coach's recruits.

Relative to the conference ehh? If we pay a 2nd year coach whose highest finish is 73 in KenPom 2mil he will be making more than:

Jim Boeheim: 948-319
Roy Williams: 724-190
Jamie Dixon: 288-96

What a precedent to set. WE WILL PAY SOMEONE WITH NO EXPERIENCE ANYTHING BECAUSE WE ARE SO DESPERATE

You think a coach who had a record of 27 wins and 28 losses a couple months ago is worth $2+ million per year. Sorry, but it's you who are off the deep end. Manning might work out for us, I sure hope so, but it is an unproven, risky hire.

If you really think that's all they make. i have a bridge for sale.

Far less risky than Ben Howland.

chill will be HC for next to free.... so, NO!!

Revisit the premise of the thread.

OP premise is flawed, we couldn't hire a top assistant for 500K. Head coaches in the ACC make ACC head coach money, otherwise they stay at their top assistant position making 500K.
