E is for Ebola (Dallas TX)

So we've figured out pour's specialty. Molecular genetics. Rad!
Well when one works on anti-microbials and anti-resistance strategies, understanding microbial change is something you have to understand since resistance mechanisms are half the battle.

NY and NJ decided to implement a mandatory 21 day quarantine for travelers that came into contact with Ebola patients. Their first quarantine... didn't go well.

Her story: UTA grad isolated at New Jersey hospital in Ebola quarantine

Gov. Christie’s Ebola quarantine messed with the ‘wrong redhead’
Two blue states...interesting given all the hysteria about Reps being idiots about it.

I think the quarantines are ridiculous but people that know they were exposed to it are lying about exposure to it, and lying about self-quarantines. Part of the CDC/WHO strategy is to have honest actors and to trace exposure if a problem occurs to contain things. If the doctors treating the patients can't be honest, then you almost have to assume everyone might be lying. I can see why that worries some people.

Dr Craig Spencer initially told officers that he had isolated himself in his Harlem apartment after returning from Guinea where he had been treating people for the illness.

It was only when cops checked his MetroCard and bank statement that they realised he had been roaming the city for nearly a week, visiting a sandwich shop, taking an Uber cab, and going bowling.

It was only when officers rang Dr Spencer and confronted him with the evidence that he confessed, according to the New York Post.

Gotta love the arrogance of these medical professionals.

Anyone that comes back to the US and infects another person, in defiance of a state ordered quarantine, should be charged with murder or attempted murder.

Just stay at home for three weeks you dicks.

Brasky can always be counted on for a measured reasonable reaction.

It's ridiculous to make something that is just supposed to be to make absolutely sure that everyone stays safe into a fucking lawsuit.

Just sit in your goddamned house for 3 weeks and let it go. Jesus. I really do hate people.

It's ridiculous to hold somebody against their will for 21 days for reasons that won't benefit anybody and have no scientific merit.

“I favor it, because it’s not entirely clear that they can’t transmit the disease,” Beutler said, referring to asymptomatic healthcare workers like Kaci Hickox, a Doctors Without Borders nurse returning from treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone who was quarantined in New Jersey for 65 hours before being transported to her home state of Maine on Monday afternoon.

“It may not be absolutely true that those without symptoms can’t transmit the disease, because we don’t have the numbers to back that up,” said Beutler, “It could be people develop significant viremia [where viruses enter the bloodstream and gain access to the rest of the body], and become able to transmit the disease before they have a fever, even. People may have said that without symptoms you can’t transmit Ebola. I’m not sure about that being 100 percent true. There’s a lot of variation with viruses.”

In fact, in a study published online in late September by the New England Journal of Medicine and backed by the World Health Organization, 3,343 confirmed and 667 probable cases of Ebola were analyzed, and nearly 13 percent of the time, those infected with Ebola exhibited no fever at all..."

That last paragraph doesn't support the argument that Ebola could be spread before symptoms appear.

Also, this is great:

He is currently the Director of the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas — the first U.S. city to treat an Ebola patient and also the first to watch one die from the virus.

Yes, they were the first US city to treat an Ebola patient (after turning him away until the symptoms were worse) and the first to cause their nurses to catch Ebola due to improper care. But sure, let's use the fact that he's in Dallas as some sort of confirmation of his credibility on Ebola.

Who is that writer?

Edit: One more "he's an expert on the immune system, which is the part of the body that defends against Ebola!"

Correct avalon, with the caveat I have not (nor do I intend) to read that research article. Not exhibiting a fever is is not the same as transmitting without any symptoms.

Also, I don't disagree (for a scientist this is different than agreeing) with many of the points Bruce makes in that article but he is an odd guy to interview on this. He is not an ID doctor or an Epidemiologist or really an Immunologist for that matyer...he is a Geneticist that uses disease models to screen randomly mutagenized mice to identify novel functions of genes/proteins. I know him well and respect him a tremendous amount for the record. Just not sure he would be the guy I would seek out for advice on Ebola.

Yep.

If you actually gave a shit about your fellow man, and not just your ego, you'd stay the fuck at home.

Just a question, is she the first health care worker to return from Africa?
