DF07 - so glad to hear that about booger! Glad that draining the fluid helped and he's back to having some more energy.

Had a really, really rough past weekend w/ Jackson, to the extent that I was nervous to even leave him to go to the movies Saturday night. Sunday wasn't much better, and then I was a total wreck on Monday about it (Because Jason was out of town all weekend and I was scared about the situation he was coming home to). Monday night Jason got home and Jack wasn't even able to get up to come greet him at the door... it pretty much sucked, and drove home the fact that we're doing this all on a day-by-day basis right now.
Now today, Jack was up when I got up this morning and went down the stairs/on a walk like nothing was wrong. So, SO glad to see him doing better but it also makes the whole process really hard - I would hate to decide to do something, with the lingering thought being that 'tomorrow might be a 'good' day.'

i had heard mixed reviews on antlers. mainly that they are so strong that dogs can break teeth on them. anyone experience that?

We haven't had a problem with our 55lb pit/lab mix. I've heard that you have you be careful about cheap antlers or knockoffs, whatever those might be. You need a legit elk horn that won't shatter as they chew.

We've just bought the elk horns from pet smart tho, and they work great. They are the priciest of the horns, but they last a long time.

The day to day is really hard to do.

This is exactly where my parents were with their 16 year old lab mix over the summer. One day she would walk a mile and the next she would fall down the stairs. Such a hard place to be in =(

We are there right now with Chester. He takes carprofen and tramadol on the bad days and just carprofen on the good days, but he is really starting to struggle. I think we are going to have to make a hell of a tough choice soon and it's killing me to think about it.

Hoping for more good days than bad for you guys. We had a dog that died young, but had cancer and had a good day bad day rotation for a while. We decided it was time to put her down when we realized that we would regret more making her face another bad day than the regret that maybe she would have some more good days.

The hard part with the good/bad day is cycle is that most dogs are so resilient, that their good days might be bad days they do a great job of covering up.

ah- we've got tramadol for Jack on bad days, too. it seems to work pretty well... but I also don't just want to mask him feeling badly so that i can feel better about the situation.

that, and a 'good' day is relative to the bad days... so the good days now would have been considered bad days a few months ago (if that makes sense).

So much sadness on the Pit Pet Thread. Hopefully someone will soon get a new pet to help brighten the mood. Until then, I pose this question...

This is my concern with Booger. That little guy would go through hell to keep me or my wife from being upset.

Just made the third trip to the vet in three months with RDToys oldest cat. I think our total bill for these three visits has to be up over 600 bucks now. Still no answers on what we thought originally was simple UTI. He got xrays today, no stones. He had a full blood panel drawn today and we're crossing our fingers his kidneys aren't failing. Stupid cat... :(

Hope he's OK. He's pretty awesome as far as cats go, although he is quite grumpy. Then again, he is 15 years old...

Man. Pet thread is heavy lately. Everyone hug your animals tonight. And if you have an old one, make sure it's for the, not you.
