It was a great year for movies, tough to pick my 20 favorites. But, here's my attempt at just that. Saw nearly everything I wanted to see, minus a few of the Oscar contenders, which I may see at some point, but I knew weren't going to make my list.

1. Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer)
2. Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson)
3. Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch)
4. Guest, The (Adam Wingard)
5. Babadook, The (Jennifer Kent)
6. Lucy (Luc Besson)
7. Starred Up (David McKensie)
8. Night Moves (Kelly Reichardt)
9. Dear White People (Justin Simien)
10. Immigrant, The (James Gray)

Honorable Mention: Listen Up Philip (Alex Perry Ross), Jodorowsky’s Dune (Frank Pavich), Nightcrawler (David Gilroy), John Wick (David Leitch, Chad Stahelski), Grand Budapest Hotel, The (Wes Anderson), Stranger By the Lake (Alain Guiraudie), Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga, The (Jessica Oreck), Cheap Thrills (E.L. Katz), Goodbye to Language (Jean-Luc Godard), and Raid 2, The (Gareth Evans)

Look forward to seeing what everyone else's favorites from the year were.

So Inherent Vice was good? After The Master, I just can't get excited about his movies anymore, even if he does make compelling flicks.

I haven't seen any others on your list except for Grand Budapest Hotel, which I found to be a middle of the road movie from him. I probably shouldn't have seen it in the theater. His movies do better on DVD.

Inherent Vice is even more odd than The Master. If you've read the Pynchon novel, or really any Pynchon, then you somewhat know what you're getting into, but my guess is that this will be even more poorly received than The Master among general audiences just due to the confounding nature of the narrative.

Is it bad that I've heard of NONE of these movies, with the exception of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (but I couldn't tell you what it's about).

ive heard of inherent vice, lucy, nightcrawlers, grand budapest hotel. where do you live to see such obscure films fanatic?

How do you know the Oscar contenders aren't going to make your list? Seems pretentious to assume so.

Mainly the biopics like Imitation Game, Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher are the ones I'm talking about. Just kind of sick of the Oscar bait biopic stuff. Haven't seen Selma yet, and I do really want to see that.

ETA: See post after this. I have those movies on screeners, just haven't gotten around to watching them yet, and didn't want to wait any more to post this thread.

Live in North Carolina, I drive to some movies, use a lot of on demand, and had an in this year for a good number of screeners to see stuff before it came out.

So I have to give a HUGE recommendation to everyone for THE GUEST, which came out on blu-ray/DVD this past Tuesday. This will be a movie that will no doubt soon be considered a cult classic, the studio completely botched the release so no one much saw it in theaters, which is a hell of a shame. Think Terminator meets Halloween meets Killer Joe.

My friend just texted me and said The Guest is awesome. Said the soundtrack was on point.

I really tried with Stranger By the Lake, I tried hard, pun intended. I just couldn't finish it. The plot was really not enhanced by some much man on man, it was gratuitous.

Not familiar with the book, but am familiar with PTA's movies so confounding narratives are ok with me. The Master sucked because it sucked. It was utterly pointless, needlessly profane (PTA usually has a point when he is over the top), and-- like all PTA flicks-- brilliantly acted.

Can we rename this thread "Townie Goes to the Cinema"? I've heard of none of these. I did, however, enjoy the Captain America movie, and I usually don't really like comic book movies.
