Wake Baseball 2015

Having lost 7 of last 9, I would think they have to make a deep ACC tournament run at this point. They are just a few games above 500 in overall record as it stands now.

I hope we can win enough conference games to get into the ACC tournament to have a chance to play our way into the NCAA's. Right now, I think we're tied for 9th - 11th with GT and UVA, with VT in 12th just a half game behind (9-12 vs 8-12). If the ACC tournament's bracket is like last year, you have to finish at least 10th to make the tournament. Even then you have to win a 'play-in' game vs 7th to qualify for the round robin pool play. 8th vs 9th is in the same situation.

Right now we just have to be able to get in the ACC tournament to then be able to have a deep run. It will be tough. We are basically in 3 way tie for 9th right now. Unfortunately with their rainout, both BC & State at 9-11 are ahead of us since we are 9-12

Deacs drop game 1 of a 3 game series to Notre Dame by a score of 9 - 5. Joey Rodriquez left game at the end of the 7th inning with some type of leg injury, possibly a pulled hamstring. SP Matt Pirro gave up 5 runs over 7 innings. Our bullpen struggled, particularly John McCarren who gave up 3 runs in 0.2 innings. Stuart Fairchild went 5 for 5 with 2 doubles and Nate Mondou hit a solo HR.

Decent crowd with a lot of Notre Dame fans.

Deacs now in 11th place with a 9-13 conference record, trailing BC and NCSU (both 9-12) by half a game for 9th and 10th. GT and UVa are tied for 7th and 8th at 10-12, a full game ahead of our Deacs. Bottom line is we need wins, particularly these 2 this weekend against the Irish. Remember, we have to finish at least 10th just to make the ACCT, and we are definitely trending downward.

Hard to get excited after the past month. We know the limitations on our pitching staff but one thing I have noticed is how other teams have strong long relief pitchers. Both BC and ND ( maybe others I am not remembering ) had long stints of 4 or more innings from middle men. McCarren has been a mess, I think Walter May have envisioned him to close but he has been very hittable. Very few meaningful innings, some better outings in games that were not very close. Offensively we are not as crisp as we were earlier in the year. Don't seem to be putting hits together in the inning, waiting for Craig or Mondou to hit a bomb. We also don't have a leadoff hitter. Pryor has been very average in that role and seems to hit best in non crucial situations. Makes you really miss Evan Stephens who was so good. Maybe they can catch fire here. Regardless, they don't have the arms to make any noise in any tournament but hope for the older guys they get to play in the ACC, although there are not many older guys. Go Deacs!!

Chris, I agree the Sunday BC loss was a killer but when you look back at the season I'm not sure we were all that good anyway. I think we knew the pitching was going to eventually collapse. Pirro, despite pitching well, isn't a number 1 starter in the ACC. Dunshee has been horribly mismanaged and there isn't much else in terms of starting pitching. The disappointment is that the schedule set up very well for us to make a run. Let's not underestimate the loss of Braezeale either. We miss his bat. There are some really nice pieces in our lineup but if I had to rank needs they are obviously 1. Pitching 2. Pitching 3. Leadoff hitter 4. Better defense at short although we have a glut of players there.

Two Wake players just go for pop-up. Neither will let the other call him off. They run into each other and drop the ball. 2-1 ND.

Have to agree with Fayettenam, that particular play was pitiful; my nephew's middle school team could have done better.

Deacs now tied with ND 2-2 after Will Craig's oppositie field HR. Craig has also relieved Johnstone as pitcher. Game is in the bottom of the 7th.

Edited to add: Deacs take 3-2 lead in bottom of 7th on Mondou's RBI single. Craig batting with runners on 1st & 2nd with 1 out

Deacs lead 4-2 in top of 8th; however Irish have bases loaded with 1 out on a rally that started with a ND batter striking out, but his bat swing hit the catcher in the neck and stunned him to the point where he couldn't make the throw to first. Dunshee now in relief of Craig.

Dunshee gets out of the bases loaded jam with 2 K's, the 1st one on a 3-2 pitch and the 2nd one of 3 pitches (g00d morning, good afternoon and good night!)

Walter must go if we don't make NCAAs this year.

Nursing a lead into the 9th tonight but will it be enough to make ACCT? Tomorrow's game huge

DEACS WIN! DEACS WIN!

Deacs hold on to win 4-2 over ND. Craig WP and Dunshee the Save. The last out was a deep fly ball to the RC warning track caught by the RF which could have tied the game since the Irish had a runner on 1st. What a game! Hopefully the Deacs can win the series tomorrow even though Stan and Lary said they're not sure who's going to pitch. GO DEACS!

Edited to add: Deacs are now tied for 8th and 9th with GT at 10-13, a half game behind UVa (10-12) in 7th, and percentage points ahead of NC State (9-12) in 10th. BC (9-13) is a half game behind us in 11th, while VT is 12th at (8-13). I know that's a lot of numbers, but there's only 3 and a half games separating 4th place Clemson and 12th place VT. With every team having at least 7 ACC games left, a lot can happen before May 16th, the final day of the regular season.

Good win for the Deacs. To be honest, I thought it had been rained out. Any idea who starts today for Wake? They also have 2 midweek games vs. High Point this week. Pitching will be stretched even more than usual. Go Deacs.

Don't know if this has been posted. But a Wake signee down in Columbia, SC threw a perfect game the other night. He is coming as a SS and has been starting in HS at SS since 8th grade. I believe his hitting is behind his glove which is typical in a young baseball player. Name is Jake Mueller.

What are we going to do with all these shortstops? Freedman, Steele, and I think Piazza all play short. Of course they can move or play other positions but there seems to be a glut at that position. Pitching has to be the top priority.

Walters recruiting has been monte given our limitations.
