Prediction Thread: UMBC @ Wake Forest - 8pm on ESPN3

Except it's not our primary defense. I understand a loss here would suck for us fans but this is the kind of game as a coach you want us to work through the problems rather than play something we do not want to use.

not to make excuses but I agree and I've been getting that vibe this entire game. Danny almost refused to call a timeout this entire game, like he wanted to see them work through it. This was really shitty but I think were better than this.

Better than getting blown out by William and Mary...

86-60 wake. They're worse than Pembroke in all likelihood. This team is awful

Doh.

This is how horrible UMBC was last year: 4-26. By Kenpom ratings, UMBC's 4 wins were over #308 Longwood, #343 Kennesaw St. and 2 wins over #345 Maine. There are 351 D-1 mens hoop teams. Their offensive efficiency was #345. Manning can name the score. WF will win by as much as he wants them to. This game is, by far, WF's easiest game of the season. WF plays no other team ranked in the 300s.

Ugh.

First game of the season, 7 scholarship players active (3 freshmen), shooting poorly, tons of whistles, there are plenty of fingers to point.

Think we'll take wins where we can get em early and keep getting better. I'm an optimist until there's a reason to lose it like some of y'all. This isn't losing to Stetson.

One big criticism I have is Danny's lineups. Collins deserved 35 minutes and should have been guarding the post. Dinos has to be one of the worst defenders Wake has had in a long time. If he's not scoring he's a complete liability. The team D was horrible.

Bad game, let's move on.

This. We won, we're without Crab and CMM, we looked like shit but have fixable things that will be resolved.

Yeah, I think not mixing zone is pretty dumb. You need to have a zone in your pocket, especially for a thin team with injuries/suspensions. You can sneak more minutes out of your core players.

Last year Manning shrugged off obvious spots where we should be mixing zone with "I'm building a program and won't sacrifice that for results." But this year we should be trying for results. And getting as many wins early in the season as possible is important.

I was mad at Giles last week but at this point who can blame him for saying no to us?
But after going like 13-19 this year, Danny and Harry would've been on at least 50% of the magazine covers!

Well, we dodged a bullet tonight....a win is a win, I suppose....

A great teaching tool for Danny in the coming days...

GO DEACS!

I know it's not comparable but I coach hs hoops and in our non league games I don't like us to switch off our primary defense vs teams I think we are bigger than, stronger than, and more athletic than. If we have a big advantage of skill, I want my guys to work out the kinks before league play rather than play something we just are not. Just my personal opinion.

Agree with this. Especially as the schedule gets harder.

You think Manning would realize better results is a plus on the recruiting trail.

Agree. On the lineups, they were weird in general due to the limited availability of scholarship players but Collins definitely deserved some more minutes.

This was a crappy game where one of the two regular starters was not hitting his outside shots so the options were limited to Thomas in a clogged lane, Dinos in the midrange, an underutilized Collins, a clearly flustered Crawford, plus Wilbekin and McClinton with some spotty production. I'm going to reserve judgement until CMM & Hudson are back. They'll both be counted on to contribute heavily.
