Wake Forest @ Bucknell - Game Thread

Another nice stat was that we held them to under 30% in second half.

Lot of good things to take away from this game.

1. Unexpected career-high from Trent Van Horn in 28 minutes. Job well done.
2. We're getting to the line, and ... although we have just a small sampling ... we're shooting 75% after two games. If we can continue shooting FT's at this %, we'll win more than we lose.
3. Wilbekin has, in fact, improved over last year ... and I totally get why Tony Bennett was bummed when he turned down U-Va. to sign with Wake. He plays under control (no turnovers in two games) and values possessions. This afternoon's 17 points may have been a career high for him, but he'll end up bettering that effort later this season.
4. Crawford is going to be good. Really good. Love his size as a PG at 6'3 200. Love the fact that he makes FT's.
5. Collins needs to get more PT. Hoping that Manning will at least experiment have Dinos, Collins, and Devin on the floor at the same time. He gets some great looks at the bucket and clearly has a lot of confidence in his ability to score.
6. Doral Moore has terrific potential. Just 18 years old.
7. Devin needs to trust his teammates ... and not force things.

Keeping fingers crossed that we have a deeper bench when he head to Maui. That said, feeling very optimistic about Danny's ability to identify prospects. Our freshmen are talented.

I only saw the final 16 minutes so my perspective may be skewed. From what I have read on this thread I was lucky. Looked like a good workman like effort on the road. Everyone seemed to contribute and the defensive effort was better. Not good...better. DT played a solid game and is a leader. Collins and Moore show promise. Dinos was sluggish today. McClinton seems to blend in and go unnoticed, but I counted four occasions he came up with a big play when it was needed. Crawford took on too much responsibility and made it look easy today. Outstanding in all phases of offense at the point. Wilbekin seemed to improve as Crawford took over and had a career high as the off guard. Van Horn with a career high 9 points in his role of safety valve off the bench. If he can continue to deliver until all have returned, he will have earned his scholarship. Not everyone can be a star, but everyone can contribute to a win.

Also Mitch logged 37 minutes today. Did well with the big work load, looked fine at the end.

A nice stat from the game: [only] 9 TOs. When was the last time we didn't have double-digit turnovers?

I heard we had ten but that obviously is an improvement, with just two or three the entire second half

Devin is so much better and I really like his composure. Looks like a leader and making very good decisions. Shot blocking improved.
Crawford looked amazing. He's got a lot of CMM in him, makes great passe and shoots FT pretty well. Gonna be great for us.
Love JC. aggressive, confident, athletic and damn good.
Great to see Wilbekin step up after last game. He was huge for us.
Moore will contribute a lot in upcoming years. His offensive game looks to be advanced compared to some freshman bigs we've had in past 10 years and he's really long.

TVH getting picked on for some reason but I thought he outplayed McClinton for the first 30 min. Looked pretty aggressive on offense, not afraid to handle the ball and was covering their best shooter reasonably well for stretches. McClinton is an awesome rebounder/ leaper. Def could use Hudson's ability to nail open shots though from the 3.

The most bipolar of teams/fanbases.

hahahaha i was just reading the game thread from start to finish and i was thinking the same thing a few posts prior to your's. very entertaining so far, I hope the last 10 or so pages don't dissapoint

On one sequence in the first half, Crawford lost his man on d and gave up an open three and then came down on the subsequent possession and threw the ball away. I want to say it was around the 8 minute mark. Manning pulled him, and I believe Crawford sat for the rest of the half. He obviously responded very well and played great in the second half.

Are there video highlights anywhere from the game?

I think Mitch will continue to exceed expectations. Scottie didn't burst onto the scene until his junior year at Florida.

Scottie's growth below. Mitch is ahead of schedule.

Season MP AST PTS
2010-11 17.1 1.6 2.4
2011-12 15.2 1.6 2.6
2012-13 31.9 5.0 9.1
2013-14 33.8 3.6 13.1

pretty sure the official wake site will release highlights eventually, they did for the exhibition and umbc

Wouldn't count on it since it's a road game. Those highlights are made from in-house video shot by Wake's video dept at the Joel

that makes sense, thanks. was wishful thinking as i didn't see any of the game

was o'brien playing the 4 when he played? because i can't think of any reason to play him 9 minutes when John Collins only played 12 minutes and was highly productive in those minutes other than manning trying to send a message to Collins. Van Horn makes a bit more sense as he's the only guard on the bench. we're stacked enough in the post to not have to play a walk-on there, unless o'brien was gettin spot minutes at the 3 where we're also thin.

Just ignore WFU22. He's an idiot and the boards are a lot better with him on mute.

Fuck you too. Everybody was criticizing Crawford in the first half and all I did was agree . But Cam Newton face has to make an issue of it (as always). Like nobody else criticizes our players ? Who is the dude who calls Rich Washington " Dick Wash"? Who says Wolford needs to be benched ? Read Dan Collins' coverage of the game. He says Crawford was 4-19 in his first 2 games and finally played well in the second half today. And , again, I'm thrilled that he did.

I was switching back and forth between this and the Panthers game, but I did watch most of the 2nd half. There were a few stretches late where DT was the only big, presumably because Bucknell went small. That's certainly a good way to counter our lineup. Forcing Manning to only use one of DT, Dinos, and Collins when we should be regularly using all three makes sense. Of course, that's all the more reason to be coaching Collins to guard the perimeter. Play him as a backup SF and use him at PF against small lineups.

Collins has 18 and 11 in his first 23 minutes of college ball. Give him more minutes.
