Wake Forest - Notre Dame Game Thread

Do we play ND again next season?

Edit: It looks like we play them next in 2017, again in South Bend. That's three trips to SB to their one trip to Winston four or five seasons ago. When are they expected to deign to play us in Winston again?

We host them in 2018 after going there in 2017. I didn't think the 2017 game counts as part of the ACC deal but perhaps it does -- confused how that works

Pretty solid effort by our guys.
Other than a few flukey plays, we really did outplay them.
Yards, first downs, time of possession.
With a little luck, we could have actually won tonight.
ND is not that good.
Also interesting that Clemson did not have an easy time with Syracuse.
Not predicting a win next week, but after today, our guys should realize they can play with the big boys if they want to.

(call me overly-optimistic, but this team is really getting better)

This ++

That sos site has all 14 Sec teams with a more difficult schedule than Clemson.

The best thing that happened all afternoon was Clawson going apeshit over the flag that was picked up after the purported late hit out of bounds. He went nuts again a play or two later after the PI call on us that really should have been an offensive PI call on ND's receiver.

Other than Odom, Clawson is the one coach we've had in my adult lifetime who actually appears to give a shit whether we're winning or losing. I was absolutely thrilled with his intensity and refusal to stand idly by while the officials shit all over us and gift scores to ND.

I agree....and he gets his money's worth when he goes off. Just surprised he didn't get flagged for this incident particularly given the venue.

AIR, Hatch landed the original 2for1 deal with ND and that had to be un-wound/melded into the subsequent ACC-ND scheduling.

“We need to win,” Coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday. “I probably shouldn’t say this, but I’ll say it. We had a couple of people come up to our players after the game on campus and congratulate them for Saturday, on how awesome the effort was and how hard they played. And that’s part of the problem. Games like that, you’ve got to expect to win. I think while you appreciate that support, it also tells you that I don’t know if anybody expects us to win those games. And we need to expect that ourselves.”

Amen!

It's great to see Clawson stand up to the low-expectation losers in our fanbase.

Dave Clawson will get us there or die trying. Spoke with a player parent pre-game and he said Clawson has visibly aged since September. And the kids love him too.

Speaking of, I have not seen a certain someone on this board in a few weeks. It's been pleasant.

Clawson's Tuesday press conferences are one of the online viewing highlights of my week. The more I watch him, the more I like him. He demonstrates work ethic, deep X and O knowledge, an embracing of expectations, and an unwillingness to take shit. All good so far.

I think I made a similar comment on this thread during the game. It's very clear.

The only part I disagree with. Not because we haven't improved, or because I think he lacks Xs and Os. But we haven't really shown a very broad playbooks or wide set of techniques. Strategy seems to be slow the game down, commit fewer penalties than the other team, and play good defense.

A roundabout reply on this....

At ND it was Senior Day and we watched ( and waited ) as each kid ran out of the tunnel to great his parents. We stopped counting at I think 18-20 or so. As we all are well aware, Wake has 5 or 6 Seniors.

From ND's site post-game....

Q. How strange was it to see Dave Clawson on the opposing sideline?

DeShone Kizer: Yeah, really weird, really weird, being a guy from the 419 area, to see a guy who's down doing some big things in the ACC is huge for us. He was kind of a community-type of guy when he was at BG, and obviously he was one of my first couple offers, so I spent a lot of time with him, and to see him doing what he's doing at a level school like Wake Forest is huge. It was nice.

Didn't know Clawson recruited Kizer while at Bowling Green.

Yeah. It was a neat tidbit that was mentioned on the broadcast. It was one of the few redeeming elements of the broadcast. Be glad you missed it.

Can imagine. ND pumps in their game radio broadcast down in the stadium concourses. Recognised the play-by-play voice of Don Criqui who I remember doing NBC TV games for the Orange Bowl many years ago. He's obviously an ND grad and gotta be in his late 70's by now.
