2016 Football Recruiting Thread - Notes from NSD Press Conference and Reception

Deac94, I have seen articles and predictions about next years depth charts and I have a question if you're willing to speculate. I see everyone assuming that our top running backs next year are going to be Matt Colburn and Tyler Bell. While not a terrible assumption by any means considering they were our top two this past season as freshman, what about Rocky Reid? He was the guy I was most excited about in our last recruiting class and I see him being significantly more talented than either Colburn or Bell. I went into the offseason expecting an improved O-line and an improved running back (because Rocky Reid would be our starter) and therefore, a massively improved run game. With the addition of Kendall Hinton as (hopefully) our starter, that is a deadly backfield. Just wondering your thoughts on where Rocky Reid is in comparison to the other guys and if you think he will ultimately end up being the starter.

I literally just came on here to post a "where is Reid?" post after reading the article about Byrd. Last I heard, Reid was injured early in summer camp and the staff thought he would benefit from a year of redshirting. If I were to guess, he or Bell will be the openin day starter--I just think most have forgot about him because we had two other frosh get a lot of PT last year.

It doesn't matter who gets to start at RB, if the OL can't run block. RB's had 58% of the running plays last year, and with a shaky OL, depth will be an asset with the pounding they'll take. Tabbacca has yet to impress and I can't wait to hear the reports from the spring on their progress.

I feel silly posting this following the basketball meltdown, but hey it happened tonight so here goes….

This evening Wake got a preferred walk-on commit that I am VERY excited about: QB Hayden Kingston from Viera, FL.

Kingston is the #59 pro-style QB in the country on QBHitList.com. Had a scholarship offer from Florida A&M. Second Team All-State in Florida in the 7A classification. Led his team on a deep playoff run, getting to the state championship game. Over 3,800 passing yards and 42 TDs in his senior season. 66% completion percentage and I think his TD/INT ratio might have been 42/9.

Kingston was also impressive at the Elite 11 Regionals. He made the regional finals in both Orlando and Atlanta.

His scholarship opportunities may have been limited by the fact that he is under-6’0 tall.

Good news. Decent QB depth can be a tricky thing with that way QBs transfer so quickly these days. Hopefully he will be cool with sticking around, even if he isn't a starter.

Arkeem Byrd's recruitment is on hold while Georgia decides if they are "in" or "out". Sigh.

There is reason to keep hope alive for landing Arkeem Byrd. The situation appears to be very fluid (and that may be an understatement) with Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Georgia, Mizzou and Minnesota being the main players still involved. Here are the key decisions that need to be made in the near term:

Byrd needs to decide if he will take a fifth and final visit this weekend. He has already visited Wake, Minnesota and Georgia Tech, so the last visit would presumably go to Georgia or Mizzou.

If Byrd takes another visit, Georgia Tech needs to decide if they will hold a spot for him. They have another round of visitors coming in this weekend.

Georgia needs to decide whether to 1) invite him to Athens for an OV this weekend and 2) whether to give him an offer. Kirby Smart has been in contact with Byrd and I assume visited Byrd as well.

The ideal scenario for Wake is that he ends up choosing between a final 3 of Wake, Mizzou and Minnesota. I would like Wake’s chances if that were to happen, although it is impossible to handicap without knowing how his Mizzou OV went (or if he makes the trip).

One thing to keep in mind is that there is NO in-person contact permitted after Sunday. So other than the school he visits this weekend, everyone else's last in-person pitch came this week. Mizzou, Wake and Minnesota have all had in-homes with Byrd.

The recruiting endgame has to be incredibly stressful for both coaches and recruits.

Not much of an update on Arkeem Byrd. All indications are that he will head to Mizzou this weekend for his last official visit. Georgia hasn’t decided anything, but appears confident that they can land Byrd without an official visit IF they have room for him.

With Byrd heading to Mizzou there won’t be any new developments before Sunday at the earliest. Here is how I think it will play out: Mizzou will try and get Byrd to commit on Sunday morning before he leaves campus, if he doesn’t commit to Mizzou then I’ll start looking for info on Sunday evening as to which schools out of Mizzou, Georgia Tech and Minnesota have filled their spots. I don’t expect Georgia to come through with an offer any earlier than Tuesday/Wednesday because I think he is merely a backup plan for them – and maybe a deep one. Given that, there’s certainly the potential for the drama to continue as late as Wednesday afternoon.

There may not be any visitors at Wake this weekend. So what else is there to watch for? I’m certainly watching two big preferred walk-on targets. We’ve discussed LB D.J. Washington (Ravenscroft School / Raleigh, NC) on this thread last week, and I know a number of you really like him. You can follow him on Twitter at @dewayne_jr14. I’m also watching LB Connor Miller (Charlotte Catholic HS / Charlotte, NC). Miller visited the 1/15 weekend. Rivals lists 13 scholarship offers for Miller including JMU, App State, Toledo and all 3 service academies. From his Twitter follows I suspect he may also be entertaining a preferred walk-on offer from NCSU. You can follow Miller on Twitter at @ConMiller6.

I think the commitment from Hayden Kingston on Thursday was probably the biggest preferred walk-on commit of the Clawson tenure. I think that landing Washington or Miller would match it.

If you think about it, there is probably a good opportunity for a preferred walk-on LB. Wake doesn’t have a LB in the 2016 class (I think LaRonde Liverpool is a DE, but could be wrong) and took only one LB last year (Nate Mays). Marquel Lee will graduate this year and Grant Dawson and Jaboree Williams will graduate in 2017.

Malik Grate mention in 247 piece:

Sleeper pickup: ATH, Malik Grate, Wake Forest
As a wide receiver, he's a pretty good player but if Grate can embrace defense, he'll have a chance to be a pro. He's got length, elite track speed and ball skills. Those are things that make you some money on Sundays. He's also got a coaching staff that does a good job defensively in Winston Salem.

Larry Collins received a crystal ball prediction to Coastal Carolina. I know interest for him has seemingly decreased, but interesting how his recruitment is going.

Any chance statham still makes a visit?

I haven't seen any definitive word on Statham, but it certainly looks like Wake has taken a pass. He took an official visit to Cincinnati last weekend. I think that was his only visit.

Wow. Wow. Hard to believe. Had an FSU offer at one point. Was very productive this year when healthy. I'd really like to know the story.

I'm actually a little worried about the depth at the outside receiver positions, especially if you think out further than 2016 (Wake will have Crump for '16). How important is it that Cortez Lewis, Steven Claude and Scotty Washington maximize their potential AND stay healthy? Those seem like three very important guys over the next few years.

This has probably been discussed; but I have not been able to keep up with things of late. I gather that we are not accepting or seeking any graduate student-athletes for next season?

Too early to tell. We need to see what happens with Byrd and how many grayshirts are in this class. Might be room for one, we'll just have to see.
