I think men's volleyball is my favorite summer Olympic event. Karch and Steve Timmons growing up were awesome.

Beach volleyball was added to the Olympics so we could see women in bikinis and the U.S. could win some more medals when we hosted. I didn't even know it was a sport of consequence before then.
You obviously don't remember the great Karch/Steffes team of the early 90s -- they were HUGE even before the Olympics. It was big news when Karch didn't team up with Timmons, but he won a lot of titles with Steffes, so I guess it worked out alright. Great rivalry with Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith.
Nearly all beach players played court before transitioning (generally college aged or later). Even the ones growing up in the beach almost always play both before specializing.Ok serious question. Is the natural transition, team volleyball to beach volleyball, or do most specialize in one throughout their career? I mean, did most players like Walsh-Jennings play team before going beach?

Beach volleyball players are generally all arounders that are flawed in some way for the court at the elite level (too small, good but not elite setter, etc). Court is a land of extreme specialists and lots of great players through their 20s just end up left out.Thanks. It's kind of funny all the sports they try to make into beach sports. I was flipping through the sports channels awhile back and ran across a "beach tennis" match. Yes, played with tennis rackets, a tennis ball, and a net, but it was more like volleyball height. I mean it was being treated as a serious thing, like beach volleyball. I've also seen beach soccer on TV a few times. Waiting for beach bowling, beach golf, beach hockey and beach lacrosse.

Good article about a hypothetical "super-race" between 800-meter world champion Rudisha and Bolt over 400 meters. Personally, I think Rudisha would take him right now, but I highly doubt Bolt would ever put his legacy at risk, even for charity. This is exhibit A, though, in why distance runners are the safe money in college track and field.

If the armed robbery didn't happen, why did Lochte need to make up a story in the first place? Was he just out after curfew and had to have a story to get back into the athletes' village or is there something else he needed a story to cover up?
Why wouldn't the writer throw Van Niekerk in there? You know the guy just broke the world record in the 400 meters?
