When did folks move their toddlers out of the crib and into a bed? How did the transition go?

I'll be wanting to move my daughter out this spring when she's a little older than 2, and thinking about getting a normal twin bed with maybe some guard rails for rolling.

We converted the crib to a toddler bed when she was about 2.5. Then moved her into a different room with bunk beds (so she's on the bottom in a twin size with a little bumper) just before she turned three.

Both transitions went surprisingly smoothly. But she never tried to climb out of her crib, so that ended up translating well. Even today at 3.5 she won't get out of bed til we come get her.

One thing that worked well for us that we did when we went from crib to toddler bed was get one of the alarm clocks you can set to change colors when they can get up in the morning. Now if she wakes up before it changes she won't yell to us until it turns green.

We are getting ready to try the transition at 21 months - trying to avoid buying a second crib for the three month old who is currently still sleeping in our room.

Yeah I was particularly interested in your response; we're about to have a similar situation where new baby is arriving and daughter #1 is not yet 2 years old. I don't want to buy two cribs either.

Hopefully it goes well for you.

I will let you know how it goes. We have the bed set up, but are waiting on the mattress. We plan to start soon so that he has been in the new bed for a bit before we move baby two to the nursery.

Was baby 2 the impetus for transitioning? Trying to figure out when we'll move to a toddler bed and don't have any real reason to yet. He doesn't try to climb out of the crib either.

Mostly yes. Although lots of her friends were transitioning as well so. And we wanted her to be in the toddler or big bed for potty training (although she still wears a pull up at night and doesn't get up to pee - just thought she should be able to).

S was the reason E moved up and P the reason S did. We may never move her.

We moved our oldest to a bed at 18 mos because he kept climbing out of the crib. Like a dumbass I figured I would put a stool on the floor so he could climb out easier and not get hurt, not realizing that he was just getting on top of the railing and rolling off. So he landed on the wooden stool and busted his head open. We started him in the toddler bed that week.

Our youngest stayed in the crib until about 2.5 when he started wearing regular drawers to bed and we wanted him to get a head start on running to the bathroom while screaming for help getting his pants down.

I think we're going to transition around 17-18 months which is when number 2 arrives; planning for a little buffer while #2 is in the master, but we'd like to get the babies in their room as soon as possible.

My 19m is currently a 2.5 foot tall tornado, hard to imagine her transitioning to a bed now. I'm pretty sure she'll flip the bed over and tear up the carpet.

I too will be joining yall on this thread in March
