Official '16-17 NBA Thread: not with a bang but a whimper

What? CP signing 4 year/150mm contract this summer when he's 32 is way different than him signing a 5 year 207mm contract. How's he supposed to make back that $57mm when he's 36?

There is a benefit, but most of it comes from being 5 years versus 4. If CP3 is still playing well, he would have made most of that up.

However, given those numbers, he is likely to make about $45M in his last year, rather than the $35M I used above. Thus the difference over those five years between staying with the Clippers and going somewhere else is under $15M.

The difference is well under 50% of that $57M number.

Well just banking on being able to command another max at 36 is an extremely flawed assumption.

Tim Duncan just got a crazy ass half back tattoo

On my phone, but I'm sure someone can find it

If my math is correct those guys mostly entered the league in the 98-02 range when there was a considerable dearth of stars entering the league

There are 5 players on that list who were ever legitimately great. I'd only call one of them elite. Two were in the 1998 draft class and three are international players.

Lebron is the only player age 32-35 who I'd guarantee would be playing at a high level at 36.

Looks like it covers over the Jester.

When does a modern NBA player's "prime" start, and how long does it last? Jordan averaged 30ppg at age 25, and at age 34, but he also spent 4 years in college and semi-retired for 2 years.

I've always thought it was 26-29 but I have no #stats to back it up.

baseball more like 28-30
football skews younger, but position-dependent
26-29 sounds right for basketball

I never realized Luis Scola was an international player !

24-29 is peak playing ability, with the absolute peak being in the middle of that range. so let's say 100% is the best season you'll ever have. Between 24-29 most players are in the 90% range with 100% at around 26/27. At 30 most people start falling off cliffs, generally. And most players are done at 34.

Jordan extended his peak by missing those seasons. LeBron already has a season's worth of minutes (~3000) more than Jordan did with the Bulls.

I don't get why Henson starts over Monroe in Mlwaukee. Henson is absolutely awful. He's weak, has no offense and can be pushed around. Monroe fits beautifully with this team.

I guess I shouldn't say it can't happen (one because the stars always want to play in the two cities I mentioned anyway), but I'd institute some fine structure against the franchises for doing this. The inter-conference fans only get one chance to see the teams in the other conference at home, so when the marquee players just decide they need a nap and don't travel it's a bad look for the league. This is gonna be a super #OWG hot take, but get your asses out there unless you are injured. I'd love to go to my boss and just say 'hey I know we've got some important stuff going on, but I'm tired from working from before so I'm just not gonna come in for a couple days' and that fly. Or at the very worst, sit your dudes for your own home games because at least the fans there have many opportunities to see the stars play.

lol... this is so dumb

Bigs who can't play defense are a liability. Same issue the Sixers have with Okafor. Monroe is dreadful defensively.

I know you are but what am I.

I'm yelling into the wind because nothing is going to be done about this, and people in places like Milwaukee, Memphis, and Charlotte will get fucked over by stuff like this and talking heads will talk about it for a cycle and that'll be that each year it happens. It's also emblematic of the issue that the NBA only has two teams that are championship contenders and will win enough games to have the ability to take nights off in those cities.

The solution would be increasing parody by adding a super max roster spot that isn't restricted by the cap. Spread the elite talents around.

If the heat or AC is on, it can move Henson out of the way. I can't imagine there is a physically weaker post player in the NBA.
