The Audacity of Hopelessness

I don't remember them either. I do remember people hating First Lady Hillary. I don't remember people hating Barbara Bush or Nancy Reagan though.

Nobody should make fun of politicians' families. It's wrong when the right does it (Michelle has been the subject of an amazing amount of ignorance), it's wrong when the left does it (like this scat); it's weak sauce. Make better arguments.

Rosalind Carter was widely criticized for being domineering and sitting in on cabinet meetings.

Betty Ford was liked.

Mrs. Nixon was not; criticized for being too stiff and distant.

Lady Bird Johnson was simply joked about.

Jackie Kennedy was much liked.

I don't remember Mrs. Eisenhower, who may have been largely absent from the press.

agree that it is unfair and wrong, unfortunately right and wrong and fair and unfair are often ignored in politics

problem is politicians use their own families and draw them into politics, and when they do, the question becomes to what extent can they be criticized, no clear standards here

I am honestly curious what you find so objectionable about that huffpo piece. Mostly just stating facts from other articles mostly written as Palin human interest stories.

For some reason I chose to click on this thread and remembered exactly why I have chosen to remove the Tunnels from my daily routine since the election. I will return to lurking on the Tommy Elrod thread and leave BSF to his racist gloating for the next four years.

If you have to ask...

Ok whatever. I could find plenty of stuff actually slamming Palin's family or talking about how Trump is sexually attracted to his daughter who will be occupying the first lady's office. Real Michelle Obama level stuff. Much worse than pulling quotes from people magazine.

The speculation that Sarah Palin secretly gave birth to her Downs afflicted grandson rather than her daughter having done so didn't strike you as off the policy menu?

Where was that speculation? I see a comment which I do think is unnecessary saying that the rumors that Trig was Bristol's son are not true. But that's it. And honestly that's pretty minor since they are saying that the rumor was untrue. Saying that a rumor is unfounded is the opposite of speculation.

In this thread, white male Republicans who helped elect a Republican whose campaign was based on the idea that America is not great mansplain to a black woman how she should feel about America right now. Zero shame.

Hell yes in her lifetime America was great. She went to fucking Princeton and Harvard Law School and then worked at one of the pre-eminent law firms in Chicago. The idea that someone whose Great Grandpa was a slave, whose father worked at a water plant and whose mother worked as a secretary at a mail order catalog can achieve all of those things is demonstrable of just how great our country is. And, deep down, she has to know it's true.

Can't be. America is a racist nation.

it's sincerely sad there are people that can't square these ideas

If the First Lady is politically active they might be deserving of ridicule. The children should be off limits, unless they grow up and become politically active, like Chelsea.

You're correct; the link made reference to the speculation; it isn't the best example. There are plenty others, but perhaps I incorrectly assumed that those theories were more in the public domain than is true. In case you haven't seen them, here are some better examples from relatively mainstream pop culture sites:

Well, you're right that I am probably too broad in saying "off limits." When family members inject themselves into the political sphere (e.g., her comment that she is "finally" proud of her country), I think the degree to which they inject themselves does become fair game. That comment of hers is certainly worthy of ridicule, but it is sufficiently ridiculous on its face that you could have a field day well-within the four corners. There is no reason to portray her in bigoted characterizations; that's the part that is beneath all of us.

For those of you that see that meme as being racist, I think it speaks to your own hypersensitive, politically correct, patronizing attitude towards black people. There would be no outrage if it was a pic of a dowdy looking white woman and a glamour shot of a black woman. But reverse it and most of you have a visceral reaction and immediately scream "Racism!" If I were to post a meme that makes fun of Serena Williams having some mannish features, most of you would once again scream "Racism!" But the same people would have no problem laughing at Will Ferrell's impersonation of Janet Reno.
