The Audacity of Hopelessness

nsdifb.jpg

You're the worst.

Michelle generally is classy. But there have been two instances when she should have just shut up. The first was when she discussed not being proud to be an American. The second was this latest incident. Trump is a shitastic example of talking out of turn. But if you are going to go high when he goes low, then carry it out and do it. We are not "hopeless" as a nation. And to say this from her perch is just the wrong tact.

The quote was that she actually was proud to be an American.

For the first time in her adult life, she is proud of her country, i.e., she has never been proud of her country before her husband got elected.

But the quote was about her being proud of her country. You can take that at its face and say "hey, that's great". Or you can get OUTRAGED that someone with a different life experience expressed an honest opinion about their opinion about their experience in America. I can understand if your sense of patriotism gets you riled up about the quote. What I can't reconcile is the same patriots getting totally psyched about a person who says that America is a disaster, and basically hasn't been great for nearly the entire lifetime of Michelle Obama. I have a hard time squaring those thoughts.

Was America great during her lifetime? How is it different?

Hell yes in her lifetime America was great. She went to fucking Princeton and Harvard Law School and then worked at one of the pre-eminent law firms in Chicago. The idea that someone whose Great Grandpa was a slave, whose father worked at a water plant and whose mother worked as a secretary at a mail order catalog can achieve all of those things is demonstrable of just how great our country is. And, deep down, she has to know it's true.

And yet Trump won precisely because his supporters agreed with him that that version of America wasn't so great.

Can't be. America is a racist nation. One of the worst in the civilized world.

Knowell knows all. He certainly is qualified to tell Michelle Obama what her life experiences made her feel about America.

Of course, he is optimistic about a President-Elect who told him America sucks and needs him to save it.

Bright guy.

Keep America as great as it was in the latter half of the 20th century!

That just shows that Michelle Obama is great.
