Weekly cell phone thread: NEW iPhone DISCUSSION GOES HERE

As a follow up - Pixel (XL) is great. Amazing camera, outstanding battery, very fast performance. And no issues so far with Project Fi and coverage. Wife and I are saving $80/month from what we were paying on Verizon.

Just got to downgrade my unexploded ordinance to a Galaxy S7 which I had already had... For my trouble, Samsung gave me a 100$ discount on a 9 month old phone, after they just conveniently raised the price by 100 dollars, and I got a $25 bill credit.

Wow, just wow. Pixel pre-orders got a coupon for a free VR headset and I got mine today. This stuff is the future.

Please elaborate. I have a Nexus 6P and apparently can use the VR Headset as well.
Regular videos are like viewing in IMAX. VR is just really immersive. Google Street Views allows you to view pretty much any location. There are a few games. But I was impressed and think the potential is massive for this becoming a massive transformation in how we consume media.

iPhone gps doesn't really work anymore. Had to get somewhere this morning and it kept saying that the gps couldn't locate me. Would then catch up after 5 miles & repeat. Any tips? I've got the latest software and it wouldn't work with Waze either.

I went ghetto for Cyber Monday. I got a Moto G4 Play for $35. I figured it was a pretty low risk means of checking out the Android side of life. It's with a pre-paid plan so if it sucks, I'll just move on. My iPhone 4 had exceeded its expiration date a few years ago, but I felt compelled to keep using it to see just how long it could be functional. The answer was earlier this year, there are just too many apps that have moved on to iOS 7+ and my 4 was stuck at 6ish.

Anyone have experience with Google project Fi?

I am at the end of my Verizon contract and thinking about making the switch.

Also sounds like there is a referral promotion going on right now, $20 to referrer and referee.

I switched about 2 months ago, no looking back for me. The coverage has been good (live in Salisbury, mostly on WiFi at work and home) and the price is even better. Send me a PM if you don't already have someone lined up to refer you. As far as phones go, the Pixel is great.

Should have just scrolled up a few posts...

Trying to decide between pixel and pixel xl. Have the moto droid turbo right now and don't really feel like I need anything bigger, so will probably go for the pixel.

Will PM

I looked at Fi briefly a couple of months ago but I think for my purposes it'd be way more expensive than what I'm paying now. I don't have wi-fi at work, and most of my heavy data usage is on my commute without wi-fi.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ debut today both with curved screens and no home button.

SD card slot and headphone jack remain.

S7 was the best phone on the planet up until now.

I love my S7. Not sure how cases will work with these curved edges etc

Guess for the $850 price of the S8+ Samsung wanted to utilize metal and glass in the case vs plastic.

So far so good on my year old S7.

Just ordered the 8 in Silver. Best Buy is $50 off.

My LG nexus 5 needs to last 3 more weeks. It was a temporary solution after my moto X screen shattered. But the resets and freezes are annoying. I have already had the motherboard replaced once and still have the same issue. Apparently LG doesn't know how to solder and there is actually a class action suit against them. Never buying LG again, even if it is only $300. Looking forward to a premium device!

Is and always has been the iphone. I hear all the weird nerd customization arguments, but for me the way apple uses its market power to integrate with a variety of other platforms wins out. The apple carplay is one of the latest examples. Why spend an extra $3K for a built in nav system for your car when you can just throw google maps up on the screen (I realize android car exists but only on bobo cars).
