Iraqi student and family arrested while depositing check

Ali, who is originally from Iraq and came to the United States in 1993, said he was depositing a check for nearly $151,000 at the Emprise Bank location at 21st Street and Woodlawn Avenue when over 15 police cars showed up and arrested him. Ali’s wife and 15-year-old daughter were also arrested. He said the check came from a house he sold in Michigan.

Ali said he and his family were arrested at 11:30 a.m. and held in separate cells until they were released around 3:00 p.m., when police confirmed that the check was legitimate.

“We were devastated. Terrified. Crying the whole time,” Ali said. “We had no idea what the arrest was for.”

Well, I would be upset about an American citizen being arrested for deposting a check in the bank while muslim, but a bunch of football players held hands with cops so everything is all good. #neverforget9/11

I'd love to hear how Ali and his family should have deposited their check differently to avoid this.

Last week in Tampa, a bank called the cops on a 25 year old black man who was waiting in the parking lot so he could cash a check when it opened. They told him to walk to the drive thru. They refused to let him into the building.

Wrong data, my bad. Estimates of only 1.1 or 1.2 million dead Iraqis. The 4 million was middle eastern Muslims killed by western military forces since 1991.

Given that the check was for 151k, I'm going to go with a wire transfer being one option.

Should he have been arrested? Hell no.

Should his family have been arrested? Hell no.

The bank should have requested time to verify the check. Nothing more. Allow the deposit and put a hold on it.
 
Wonder what suspicion or probable cause the cops had to arrest and detain. Bet they end up settling for a decent chunk of change. Seems pretty dumb unless they had some sort of actual tie to a crime or terrorism.

Something isn't adding up. 15 squad cars because an Arab presented a large check for deposit? Were the cops called when he presented the check? Were they called when he was in line? In the parking lot?

Just seems odd that a call from the bank about a suspect looking person making a large deposit would attract 15 cars. I'd expect that kind of response if someone pushed an alarm indicating the bank was being robbed, or if they thought the guy was a terrorist about to blow the building up, but not for trying to deposit a check.
 
Agreed. Also odd that it took so long to release him and his family. Probably more to the story here, but if there isn't then the city needs to get ready to fork over some dough.

I assume the 15 cars was an exaggeration, unless the Wichita police really have nothing to do. The police said they were responding to a report of an attempted forgery.

Wichita Police Detectives were utilized as part of the investigation due to their expertise and access to additional resources. The Detectives, using the additional resources, were able to verify the legitimacy of the check."

Its almost as if you think 1.2 million Iraqi deaths is a reasonable consequence of a terrorist attack that wasnt commited by Iraqis.

Without HW Bush and Baker instructing Amb. Glaspie to lie to Saddam, there would have been no first Iraq War. Saddam asked the US directly what out reaction would be and he was lied to and then invaded. If HW and his team told Saddam, "If you go 1mm into Kuwait, we will kick your ass back to Baghdad and destroy your army", there would have been no Gulf War 1.

Without that war, it's likely 9/11 doesn't happen, because we wouldn't have had our "infidel" army based throughout Saudi Arabia.

If W and his cabal don't lie us into the second Iraq War, there wouldn't be any ISIS. The creator of ISIS would still be a general in the Iraqi army.

Much of the terrorism that exists today was directly caused by the lies of the Bush family. It's simple and direct historical fact.

Its very obvious you don't want to talk about the Iraqi war death toll. I suppose you'll eventually counter with data showing only a few hundred thousand media confirmed deaths, which don't even account for the mass graves all over the country. But hey, "Mission Accomplished", right?
