Going up to Mt Airy for my birthday and am going to catch Jessie McReynolds and the Virginia Boys in Galax.

He just put out an album of GD covers, so I am interested to hear his take on some classics.

This was a a great show BTW. If you have never been to the Blue Ridge Music Center it is a great place to see a concert. Only about an hour from WS.

Fucking love that video TAB. As I've discussed with my gf, the cover was always intriguing, but that video puts it over the top.

In other news, the new St. Vincent is streaming on NPR this week. It's good, not great after my first 3 listens. I really like Surgeon and Year of the Tiger.

Other Lives, out of Stillwater, OK.

I remembered hearing them under their former name Kunek back in 06, then I guess due to name change or whatever, I lost track. They got very good.

Very cinematic, strings sound a bit like Radiohead's "How To Disappear Completely." The whole album is legit.

For you Virgin Freefest people:

OH I forgot...at the Baltimore Grand Prix this weekend the same people did concessions as at Merriweather and I got mixed drinks for $8....and they LOADED them up with Jack. Don't know if it was the girl working or what but even if its $10 its still the best value for getting you absolutely sloshed if thats your goal. Personally I'd rather stay in control with beer (should've done that Saturday, whoops) but figured I'd put the info out there.

this is awesome.

Trying to see Spencer Krug (as Moonface) in nyc, but its a Sunday night. might be worth taking that Monday off...

in other news, check out the new The Drums on Spinner. very very catchy music.

Thoughts on the new St. Vincent album? She was on letterman last week and just starting to listen to her album on npr's First Listen.

Thanks. Completely missed that. Love her voice, but it's a little too quirky for me.
Like the new Blind Pilot on NPR. Good mellow stuff. They played a radio set outside our hotel at last year's ACL.

St. Vincent definitely isn't as good as this go-round, and she sort of hyped up the expectations with her crazy site and the scheduled Twitter leaks of songs and stuff.

She is a sexual beast though.

Check her out doing some more rock-type stuff earlier this year :swoon:

or the breathy, hendrix-sounding beatles cover

She is defs super talented. I believe she has a great album in her, but it hasnt come out yet. She needs someone to Mark Ronson her up and help her hone her sound and talent.

I dont think she accomplished it on this album, although I havent given it a fair listen yet. The sax parts in Surgeon are pretty corny.

You're lucky I'm at lunch....off the top of my head:

-Park in the main lots (free), they'll exit relatively quickly and should dump you right on 29 South to go straight to DC. However one lot will be used for a stage so it may fill up early. If so, park across the street at the mall.

-Tailgating is probably fine in the lots, don't quote me on that depends on how the cops feel. Definitely don't tailgate in the mall. Private lots where you'd pay is whatever you want. What you can/can't bring in should be posted, I'm guessing no lawn chairs.

-Lots of people dig the artwork scattered around the perimeter of the lawn

-The pavilion itself will fill up quick, capacity is something like 6k. Sometimes there are wristbands, sometimes not. If not its one in, one out. So basically you can't really leave or else you'll lose your spot. Zero idea what they'll do this year, those orders come from the festival people.

-I'm guessing TV on the Radio then The Black Keys will close out the pavilion stage and Cee-Lo then Deadmau5 will close out the temporary stage in the parking lot. Usually staggered so you could see like 30 minutes of both if you wanted but you'd be pretty far away.

-24 oz beers are $10, lots of mixed drinks options floating around too. There will be a lot of different food vendors all over the place.

-Lots of shade in the areas that aren't looking towards the stage. But where you'll be watching the music will be directly in the sun.

That's all I can think of for now, ask away :plos:

ok have to make an addition- so I'm reading that you can only park in the main lots if you have 4 or more people in the car. Makes sense since that parking is limited, especially with one lot being taken up with the festival stage and all the various activities out there.
