Rejecting words and actions which perpetrate, support or encourage white supremacists

Is this one of those blacks are better off here than in Africa so you're welcome.

There's a lot of this "white people did some bad shit but it's all good cause America!!!" interpretations of history out there.

I've heard people justify the treatment of Native Americans with "they got casinos."

Birth of a White Supremacist

Billie wondered aloud how to tell their friends and family about Mike E. “What do you do?” she said. “Send a letter to your cousins—‘Haven’t spoken to you in twenty years, hope you’re doing well, and, oh, P.S., our son’s a Nazi now’?” She worried that people would wonder what she and Mike, Sr., had done wrong as parents. “Everyone wants it to be simple, to know who to blame,” one of Mike E.’s relatives told me later. “But lots of kids have parents who get divorced when they’re young. Lots of white kids have difficult personalities. They don’t all become Nazis.”

A few people around town had already heard the news, mostly through Facebook, and some of them were talking about Mike E. as if he had been abducted by a cult, or tied down and injected with a serum of pure hatred. Other people assumed that there must be some key biographical fact—a chemical imbalance, a history of abuse—that would neatly unlock the mystery. But Mike E.’s conversion was more quotidian than that, and therefore more unsettling; somehow, over time, he had fallen into a particularly dark rabbit hole, where some of the most disturbing and discredited ideas in modern history were repackaged as the solution to twenty-first-century malaise.

We talked about “The Culture of Critique,” the anti-Semitic text that he’d found so formative, and I mentioned that I’d just ordered a copy. “Well, don’t red-pill yourself too hard,” he said. Then, after a pause: “You’re not Jewish, are you?”

I am. I don’t put triple parentheses around my name on Twitter, as some Jews do, in defiance of T.R.S.’s Echo. But I have never made a secret of my identity. I have written for Jewish magazines. My face looks Jewish. My name sounds Jewish.

“Yep,” I said.

“Interesting,” he said, sounding a bit flustered. “Fully Jewish, or half Jewish?”

“Fully,” I said. “Your Jewdar must be broken.”

“Yeah, well, you’ve got red hair,” he said. “That threw me.” He encouraged me to read MacDonald’s book nonetheless. “I would hope that you would be able to look past any dissonance and at least examine the argument,” he said. “Maybe do some internal—not that I expect you to hate yourself . . .” He trailed off.

The guy's lawyer has video he claims to be of the accuser being attacked by not DeAndre Harris

Man brutally attacked during 'Unite the Right' rally to surrender after arrest warrant issued

According to the lawyer, Crews is a member of the League of the South, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified as a neo-Confederate hate group. Crews serves as a chairman for the hate group’s North Carolina chapter, Merritt said.

Merritt disputes that Harris was the instigator. He claims Harris used a flashlight to fend off Crews, who was wielding a “sharpened end of a Confederate flag pole,” Merritt said.

“Mr. Harris swung a flashlight in the space between the flagpole and Mr. Crews, failing to make significant contact before the brief scuffle ended,” the statement read.

He attributes Crews’ injuries to a separate brawl that did not involve Harris. He supplied video of that fight, which shows Crews tussling with at least three to four men, who are white, in black clothing. He then falls to the pavement while gripping a Confederate flag.

The cops and CAs are reviewing tons of tape and are charging those they can. Deandre and his brother are 2 local guys who joined the antifas and were battling here and there with white supremacists. I believe his brother was the 1 with the fire coming from the spray can at the guy swinging the flag. His attorney is going to say what he's going to say, but they have video of Deandre behaving violently as well. Not that it excuses that protracted ass kicking he received in the least.

So last night, our local radical group, SURJ, disrupted a Planning Commission meeting to the point where the cops were called and the meeting was canceled. Part of their protest was about Deandre being arrested. Not sure what our Planning Commission had to do with Deandre's arrest.

Edited to add that, based on a new story, it wasn't the Cville cops who had Deandre arrested. It was a magistrate who issued the warrant based on the sworn statement from 1 of the white nationalists at the rally. So could be a bullshite charge. I'd think that if they can't find corroborating evidence, the CA's office will nolle pros it. And if they find video evidence to the contrary, they could charge that white supremacist with perjury. That happened recently when Albemarle County charged Jason Kessler with perjury when they discovered from video the person who he said hit him didn't hit him at all.

Great, now City schools are on lockdown. Jason Fucking Kessler has really brought out the crazies on both sides in what used to be a cool city in which to live.

10/11/2017 Release from the Charlottesville Police Department:

On 10-11-2017 the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) notified the Charlottesville Police Department that they had received information from a post made on a social media message board expressing discontent with recent events in Charlottesville. The person(s) who posted the message also referenced the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas and expressed their admiration of the shooter. They went on to say that Charlottesville, in particular, schools within the city, should be the next target.

At this time there is no information on the identity of the person(s) who posted the message. City officers have been posted at all of the city’s schools and at many of the private schools.

Our department is coordinating with Charlottesville City School and Private School Administration in regards to these threats. As part of these efforts, Charlottesville City Schools are currently on a modified lockdown.

This sounds intense. Any links?

They were also there to protest gentrification and the lack of affordable housing.

Subverting the standard criminal complaint system is not new in Charlottesville. Since April, many local activists have been targeted for their anti-racist work. When the police don’t press charges, citizens go to the magistrate and swear out a statement and the magistrate can issue a warrant. This has happened over and over again: white supremacists going to the magistrate to press bogus charges against anti-racist activists.

This is one egregious example of how white supremacy manifests itself in this city. Affordable housing for extremely low-income people has also rapidly disappeared in this city, recently recognized as having the largest income gap in the state. Developers are attempting to put in a 9 story building on the corner of Water and 2nd St, where each floor would be worth $1-1.5 million, and house only a single tenant. It is unthinkable that the City Council would entertain these greedy developers while ignoring the needs of our most marginalized community members. It was at this point in the Commission meeting that Charlottesville activists shut down the hearing about this special use permit. City police, including Chief Thomas, were called in: no arrests were made, and the meeting did not reconvene.

Numbers, no links - just from different folks in the city who I've spoken with. I kinda doubt the city would go through with the prosecution if they can't find corroborating evidence. What they usually do when there are he/she said cross warrants is the prosecutor will introduce the case and then step back and let the 2 folks tell their stories. But in this instance, I don't think they'll prosecute it without video or other witness confirmation.

MHB, yeah, I said part of the protest. Affordable housing has long been a bone of contention around here. If you're building a large, multi family site, you have to provide a certain number of "affordable" units or pay a surcharge which then goes into the city's affordable housing fund. So most every developer outside of Habitat (which has done some phenomenal work in the Cville area) has opted to pay the surcharge to the city. Problem is that fund has unfortunately resulted in not more affordable housing units. The major bone of contention has been what to do with decaying public housing. The city has wanted to redevelop those sites and make them into mixed income, mixed use sites with greater density, along the lines of what they've done in Greenville SC and Washington. The residents association has been against that and has essentially wanted the city to just rebuild what they have and make it nicer. There are many problems with that, and the main one is financial because the city would lose millions doing that. And the residents association has done a lot of protesting around here, and the city doesn't want to sink many millions of dollars into something that is going to be protested, so they've just been sitting on it.

Yeah, please provide a link. I have a close relative in school in Charlottesville.

The kids are safe staying inside the schools, especially with the additional police coverage. My assistant's kid is in HS here, and my assistant got a text from the City announcing what was going on this a.m. It didn't sound like the threat was active - more like an abundance of caution thing.

There were more active threats from the white supremacist sites that they were going to try to disrupt the Heather Heyer memorial service, which is about as low as you can get. But there was a yuge police presence outside for the service, and nothing fortunately happened that day.

"IT’S STRANGE HOW some things really catch on and go viral and others don’t. These days, nothing quite makes a story blow up — no pun intended — like the president’s fixation with it. That’s why it’s so peculiar that what sure looks like an attempted terrorist attack was narrowly thwarted at an American airport this past Friday without so much as peep from Donald Trump about it. No tweets. No nicknames for the alleged would-be-terrorist. Nothing..."

What a shock that Trump didn't out a white guy!

Glad I am sitting down.

http://www.nbc29.com/story/36582042...-charge-deandre-harris-with-unlawful-wounding

An update on the Deandre Harris case. Some of the articles on his arrest were contradictory as to whether it was the cops or a magistrate who issued the arrest warrant. Which is understandable considering reporters don't necessarily understand the difference between a magistrate and a cop. It's normally pretty easy in VA to get a magistrate to issue a warrant because they're normally just going on the word of the complainant. So once that was clarified yesterday, I thought it more likely that it could be a bullshite charge. But the magistrate turned out to be a bit more enterprising and wise and asked the city cops to verify there was grounds for issuing the warrant before issuing it. And after reviewing the incident (I'm assuming video evidence), the cops verified it to the magistrate and issued the warrant. So now I'm guessing there is a lot more merit to the case than if it had just been a magistrate taking the complainant's word at face value.

And FWIW and on the bright side, no one has apparently threatened Cville schools today.

Another Cville update. Our very nice General District Court judge, who has a rep for being on the lenient side in criminal cases, denied bond yesterday for the dude from MD who shot the gun at the 8/12 rally. He had also denied bond for 2 of the guys who gave Deandre that beatdown. And Deandre got was released without having to post bond. Our new Circuit judge, who will try these cases, used to be a life long CA and has a rep for being pro commonwealth in criminal cases. I'm hoping that he uses the rally violence as an aggravating factor in these prosecutions to really slam these guys. If folks didn't learn lessons from Portland and Berkeley, maybe Cville can be the lesson that you're not getting bond if you're from out of town and you get slammed with your sentence. Maybe that will be a deterrent from folks throwing down at future rallies.
