On An Airplane Next To A Fat Guy

Unfortunately, Southwest flights out of Charlotte are virtually non-existent. Basically like trying to find a unicorn to most places.

Yeah, I think it would be a double connection at best. Charlotte only flies to Dallas, Nashville and Chicago I think? and Nashville doesn't fly to Tampa. But Raleigh has direct flights to Tampa.

Trying to figure out whether to use miles or pay cash:
Flight to Chicago in December on American:
25,000 miles total or $330 + fees to fly main cabin
50,000 miles total or $575 + fees to fly first class

First class seems like a relative deal: I only have 95K miles, but leaning to burning the miles.

So, Points or Cash?

Just booked my first American Basic Economy ticket. Even with the $25 each way I'll have to pay to check a bag, it was still a good $200 cheaper than the Main Cabin alternative. I'm certainly not going to do that every time, and especially not when work is fronting the bill, but damn, that's a good deal for a last minute flight.

I've never looked into it but I can put up with a small seat and a screaming kid for 2.5 hours if I can sit in the dentist's chair that long. No fat guys though.

Points - my rule of thumb is as long as you're coming out at less than a 100 mile/$ ratio, you should just go ahead and use the miles, unless you're saving them for an out of country trip or something. You're coming in right at 75/$. Wonder if there's anything statistically that would back this up. Probably not.

That's generally been my rule of thumb, too. Saw a couple of things using the Google machine indicating .013/mile to .015/mile for American (each airline is slightly different), so that equates to $650-750. But it's always nice to have a "free" flight.

Well $330/25,000 = .0132, so it looks like you're right on track there, as well. By that logic, your 95,000 miles should get you over $1200 worth of tickets. Math is fun!

If more than 3 hours I'd go with miles for first.

I would never use miles for a domestic flight.

Yeah. Flying out of Charlotte is one of the downsides to Charlotte.

But you're primarily stuck with the legacy carriers.

On balance, I love Charlotte for the direct flights. You can leave in the am and be on the slopes in Alta that afternoon. As a side note, Park n Go is cheap and convenient, too.

Yeah, but discount airlines suck, they are cheap though i will give you that. I have never heard the flying out of Charlotte sucks hottake before, I think it is a pretty good airport.

One thing that does suck for certain though is living in Winston and having a hour and a half drive to a from the airport. It is so nice to live within 20 min of a major airport.

I think LAX is my least favorite airport in the States, followed closely by Newark, Dulles, and Philly.

Dallas is by far the best major airport, it is laid out great.

ATL is laid out the best. DFW is laid out logically but is massive -- it can take forever to get to your gate on the train.
