Anyone tried this from 1988? I have a friend wanting to sell me a bottle.

Anyone tried this from 1988? I have a friend wanting to sell me a bottle.

Only person I could think of would probably be BearsandDeacs. How much? I bought 3 bottles of Stitzel-Weller juice (Rebel Yell, Cabin Still and Old Fitz Prime) from the late 60s/early 70s for $300.

His asking price was $350 a bottle. I told him he is not really my friend at that price.

That does seem steep, but I am definitely not an authority. I may have gotten ripped off on the 3 bottles I bought, but I feel like I got a fair deal.

I don't think that $350 is a bad price for that bottle based on the current market. At that price I'd take it off his hands if he wants to sell and you don't want it.

Had a couple of pours of Weller SR last night. First bourbon I've had in a while - so fucking good.

Anyone ever had Midsummer Night's Dram? Had a couple of pours last week. Blended, seasonal Shakespeare-themed rye whiskey: I really enjoyed it. Didn't realize it was like $200 a bottle.

Retail price is more like $70-80 I think

Rum is interesting. So many off the shelf rums today are full of added sugar and coloring and it definitely has an impact on the taste. I prefer a good rhum agricole, which is made from sugar cane juice as opposed to molasses. It's also a French term and was originally from the French caribbean islands (although i think that others are now producing it the same way). Rhum agricole also has stricter rules so you get a *more* pure product. Definitely worth doing some research - a good reference site is Captain Jimbo's Rum Project (http://rumproject.com/).

Here's another great reference if you want to check how much sugar has been added to your favorite rum:

Bringing this rum post back up, as I've been trying different aged rums lately, and had one that is as close to a whisky as I've ever had in a rum. Foursquare Port Cask Finish. The oak really comes through, and it is not as sweet as most other rums. I guess their distiller (Richard Steale) is known as being a rum purist and eschews added sugars and other outside ingredients. At only $40, I definitely recommend giving this one a shot. Another that I really like is Plantation 20th Anniversary XO, although it is more sweet.
