SPOILERS: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Discussion Thread SPOILERS

There was no way they were going to kill Leia off at that point in the movie. Planned or re-cut after her death. They would not have cut her final good bye scene with luke.

I thought TLJ was ok but expect it to get worse with subsequent viewings over time.

Christensen wasn't the problem with the prequels, IMO. It was the script/direction. When I did the marathon before TFA, I kept noticing during the prequels that there are decent movies hidden in there, and I think that's something that's lost when you're not watching them for ~9 hours straight. Christensen had really good chemistry with McGregor and McDiarmid, but literally none with Portman, which is a problem given how much focus Lucas ended up giving to Anakin's relationship with Padme.

I think the biggest issue with the prequels was that they shot themselves in the foot by keeping Christensen away from actors with whom he actually shared chemistry.

I would agree that Christensen wasn't THE problem with the sequels but he was certainly part of the problem.

Darth Maul was way too cool a villain and he shouldn't have been killed off so soon.

Pod Racing was neat but was given way too much screen time in the first one.

Jar Jar.

There should have been a lot more focus on the Jedi Order at the height of its power than the love story between Anakin and Padme. Yes, we all know they bang and make a Luke and Leia, we don't need to dedicate a full movie to setting that up.

The Anakin-Padme focus was in AOTC not TPM. I agree TPM should have focused more on the Jedi Order, but it did show their hubris and establish that it was a problem.

Sure. I wasn't focusing solely on TPM but I think the fact that you assumed that based on what I posted goes to show how bad a movie that was.

Gotcha. I was confused because TPM portrayed the Jedi at the height of their power but they were reeling in AOTC.

I read a good article recently that did a good job connecting the fall of the Jedi Order to the political context of the 90s and 00s. It’s a little too political of an article for this thread though.

One thing I’d like to see Star Wars do is actually go back to a planet they’ve shown before. Or go to another part of a planet. I’d like to see how Coruscant looks nowadays.

just saw it. felt like a comic book movie with star wars characters. color me meh.

Seems like everyone agrees that the casino scenes with Finn and rose were the only redeeming parts of the movie

Saw it with my 9 year old daughter this morning, who loved it (and Empire Strikes Back is her favorite movie of the series, so she has a pretty good feel for these things).

Wasn’t crazy about the Leia/Mary Poppins scene. Didn’t hate the casino sequence, but liked that it set up the thought that the military industrial complex fueling an years-long war was another source of evil in the galaxy.

Favorite sequence was probably the light saber battle in Snoke’s chamber. Well done. Benicio del Toro was also fantastic in his limited role.

All in all, not bad. On the whole, I preferred Rogue One to either of the new trilogy pieces. Looking forward to Solo this summer.

After a lot of thinking and reading dumb millennial think-pieces, I've decided I'm meh on all of this. They're never going to live up to the original trilogy, or at least my nostalgic idea of them. My criticisms aren't anti-feminist or fanboi or dudebro, they're just the ruminations of a sad 80s kid who lived nothing but star wars for more than fifteen years. my day is done. Enjoy this you phdeacs with kids and Disney passes. I'm just going to live my life

James Bond goes to casinos all the time and people love it. Oceans 11 has as many spinoffs as Star Wars. Now, all of the sudden, casino side trips are a bad thing.
