Wake Forest Football Recruiting

I really dont understand how anyone can anticipate Hinton being as accurate as Wolford. Also, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if Hinton ends with less rush yards next year than Wolford had this year. Hinton has to take a big leap to be in the same discussion as the guy who just had arguably the single best season at QB in Wake history.

Decision making will define his season. Wolford was VERY GOOD at making the right call when running the RPO. I hope Hinton has an even better season than Wolford this year but he has a lot to prove on the field.

This. And DC should take a qb grad transfer as insurance policy.

I think that we have witnessed an epic career by Mr. Wolford, especially considering how it commenced. It will be difficult for another QB to combine the toughness, ability to read defenses, accuracy in passing and running ability and decision-making. Hopefully we will have more athletic QBs, at least in terms of size and strength; but it may be a long time till we have the combination of abilities possessed by Wolford. His mental toughness was extraordinary.

It is unfair to expect Hinton or whoever to do all that John did.

Now, team wise and record wise we will hopefully improve. But the performance of Wolford first with weak OLs and without a running game and then with weak receivers and then with a fuller compliment of talent this season was all remarkable. At every point he did the best that could be done, arguably, with what he had. He was brutalized and looked bad at points; but he kept at it without blaming his teammates and without quitting. When all the parts came together, he was one of the best in the nation.

I just don't think most of us appreciate what we have witnessed over his career.

Hinton had about 25% of Wolford's rushing yards playing about a game and a half

People really need to stop using the Clemson game as some kind of pro-Hinton advertisement. We got shut out when it mattered, he was ineffective running the ball (like 20 yards at the half), and our offense broke down into either chucking it deep or getting stuffed trying to run it. In the 4th quarter after they went up 28-0 with many of their starters already sitting, Clemson was nice enough to clear the bench and give us some points. In the 2nd half down 14-0, Hinton accounted for under 50 yards of offense over 5 possessions, fumbled once, and completed only 1 pass.

No, Wolford wouldn't have lit up Clemson - but if anything it was that performance that made it look like Wolford was just on a completely different level. It's a fair argument to say Hinton could make the same jump Wolford did. I'd argue that Wolford always had a quick release and made good decisions when given time whereas Hinton is elusive and throws a nice deep ball so it's not very likely. I think a better argument is that Hinton might not get all that close to Wolford's play this year - but he'll have a crazy good receiving group and a rock solid running game to help him out so the offense could be a wash. Which would be awesome.

I'm definitely in the camp that's worried about Hinton running the offense effectively enough to improve on this season, which is the goal. Would absolutely love to be wrong, and the schedule is going to be soft early so we can survive some growing pains.

Hey everybody! Stop discussing that one full game Hinton played this season in our discussion of Hinton.

I don't have clip as I was there and saw it happen. He got hit on his knee on a tackle - got up looking to shake it off. I felt then he should have come out. Being 'tough' I suspect he wanted to, and did stay in. The next play he moved to his right on a run and it gave way very noticeably. Are you saying you don't believe that sequence of events?

Also, somebody go ahead and track down that clip of Hinton getting smashed a couple of plays before he succumbed to the "green monster" or whatever nonsense you people continue to trot out about his injury.

I can see how my sarcasm was perhaps unclear. Let me rephrase, because we are in agreement.

I was responding to this argument that Hinton's knees are weak and he suffered a non-contact injury:

Hinton's injury was caused by the grass monster.

I should have said "Also, somebody [please, no sarcasm] track down that clip of Hinton getting smashed. [It was] a couple of plays before he [purportedly, according to Deaconblue and others] succumbed to the "green monster" or whatever nonsense [they] continue to trot out about his injury."

Hinton played fine. Clemson is the best defense we played all year and we had several drops. The offense wasn't clicking yet on multiple levels. The prior road game to Clemson was Appalachian state and Wolford was 14 of 27 for under 200 yards and we had 9 3 and outs.

Once again, you guys are on the wrong thread to talk about Hinton. There is another thread for that. Let's talk about recruiting on this one that is labeled 2018 Wake Forest Football Recruiting!! If it involves a quarterback recruit that is vying for Hinton's spot then that would be different.

Who are our remaining targets for the 2018 class? Since we have 6 kids starting in winter, don't they count against last year's numbers which means we can take even more this year should we choose to do so?

At the December signing day news conference, DC left the door open to take "1, 2 or 3" more recruits depending on what opportunities arise and depending on the status of 4th year juniors who may decide not to return for the 2018 season. Deac94 or someone else who knows the precise numbers can comment, but I believe we are right at the 85 scholarship limit (maybe even 1 above) counting those that signed in December + all those eligible to return for next season.

Don't they still count yards lost from sacks against the QB's rushing totals? For a full time QB, that tends to depress the true "rushing" totals...

How many times was Wolford sacked? We had one of the best o-lines in the country I can't imagine it would be very many/enough to make a huge difference.

Yes, But Hinton can get sacked too.

Best OL ? Not in his 1, 2, 3 years for career totals.

These are the posts I was referring to. I assumed we were talking about rushing totals for the year - which is where the "one of the best OL in the country" came from.

I believe Devonte Gordon will be a grayshirt due to an injury. Do we know of anyone else delaying enrollment that might affect scholarship numbers?

If that dude is grayshirting he's going to be an absolute monster by the end of his career.
