2017-18 Men's College Basketball Thread (NWT)

Besides the casual fans that you are talking about, people who watch ACC basketball watch this game. If you are someone who watches Clemson-Florida State, you will watch this game. Sure, it's high profile, but it's basically just another ACC game. You either watch ACC basketball or you don't, sounds like you don't. Part of it is growing up with it. Most of us from North Carolina will watch it, but since fewer Wake people are from NC anymore, they don't have the history.

I'm a Tobacco Road lifer and didn't watch a minute of this thing; didn't need to b/c the WalMart'ers in my office will spend the first hour today recounting every glorious minute in full detail.

One and done model not looking good this year

The one and done model works best when there is a decent mix of returning and freshman stud players. As talented as Duke's freshman are, they are so deficient defensively. This Duke team reminds me of the Jabari Parker (who also played zero defense) team that lost early in the NCAAs.

Makes me happy to see Duke sell their soul and then falter as the season goes on.

Duke has 1, 2, and 3 coming in next year, but none seem to be as good as Bagley. I don't know, Barrett doesn't strike me as anything close to a transcendent player.

I wonder how Indiana fans feel about Ohio State's immediate success this year w/ Holtmann while they are struggling w/ Miller.

Holtmann may turn out to be the next great Big 10 coach, but their success this year is largely driven by Kenta Bates-Diop carrying the Buckeyes. Bates-Diop missed last season with a stress facture in his leg and tOSU collapsed. Had he been healthy last year, Thad Matta would still be coaching tOSU. This is a classic example where one coach (Matta - who can coach) gets killed and Holtmann gets praised when talent played a huge role in the tOSU turn around.

Yeah, and Holtmann has been very complimentary of the roster that Matta left behind. Will be interesting to see if he can keep it going next season.

Matta & Crean are both guys I'd love to have coaching WFU.

I don't think Duke makes it passed the 2nd round in the NCAAs this year and I doubt they will be any better next year despite the media inevitably crowning them pre-season #1 and national championship favorites. Keep in mind they will be even less experienced next year and likely start 5 freshmen. K can obviously pull in anyone he wants, but 1 and dones rarely have success in the tournament. There are exceptions, but even that 2014 Duke team and UK team had 2-3 veterans on them.

Holtman is too old for DR.

I look for Hoard after some time to fill the Dorn type role for us. Slasher, hustle, stat stuffer, defender

What I wonder is in general how will they share the ball? Rumor is Trent might come back so the perimeter will have Jones, Trent, Barrett, Reddish, and O'Connell. Not enough FGA's a game for all those guys to get their shots. My guess is Jones and O'Connell take a back seat and the top scorers end up being Barrett, Reddish, Trent, and Zion. No room for EJ to get buckets, don't know why he would go there.

ESPN really needs to stop with the Trae Young lovefest.

Man, I can see Duvall needing to stay another year but Trent has the game for the next level. By the way, who in the hell are the 5 Duke first round picks the talking heads keep referring to? LOL if they think Duvall or Allen even warrant a sniff of the first

A few sites have Duval and Allen as late (#25-30) first round picks. I think it has more to do with athletic potential than statistical performance.

Watching Luke Maye reminds me that a preferred walk-on offer can turn into a great college player. Imagine if Sr. year Okeke turns out to develop into as good of a player as Maye is for UNC now.
