Official thread about the movie you just saw

^This. Gran Torino is entirely one note - there's no nuance, there's no depth, there's no real conflict for the viewer.

And Sully was complete garbage, which was a total shame given the subject matter.

a solid B+

just a reminder, this movie had a budget of $59 million:

Eastwood is pretty famous for just trying to get things as done as quickly as possible so they got the take, time to move on to the next shot

Movies that didn’t need to be made but were made in the style of a Toby Keith money grab against the rubes.

The 15:17 to Paris
Sully
American Sniper
Deepwater Horizon
Patriots Day

Wait, was that another "starring the actual heroes" movie?!?!?

From Wiki:

After holding casting calls in Fresno, California, Detroit, Michigan, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, Eastwood selected ten Hmong lead actors and supporting actors. Of them, only one was not a first time actor.[6] Of the Hmong cast, five, including Bee Vang,[5] one of the principal actors,[7] were from the state of Minnesota.[5] Ahney Her comes from Lansing, Michigan. The casting agency Pound & Mooney recruited thirty actors and over 500 extras. The firm recruited many Hmong actors from a Hmong soccer tournament in Macomb County, Michigan.[7] Sandy Ci Moua, a Hmong actress based in the Twin Cities, assisted with the film's casting of Hmong actors.[8]

also:

The screenplay was written entirely in English. Therefore, the actors of Gran Torino improvised the Hmong used in the film. Louisa Schein, author of Hmong Actors Making History Part 2: Meet the Gran Torino Family, said before the end of production that "some of the lines actors ad-libbed in Hmong on camera will be tricky to translate back for subtitles."[26] Screenwriter Nick Schenk had input from Hmong people when writing the script.[28] Dyane Hang Garvey served as a cultural consultant, giving advice on names, traditions, and translations.[5]

Vang argued that the use of the Hmong people did not seem relevant to the overall plot. He said "there is no real reason for us to be Hmong in the script" and that even though Walt Kowalski had fought in Korea, he had still confused the Hmong with Koreans and other Asian ethnic groups.[29] In a 2011 program Vang said that Hmong actors were treated unfairly on the set, and that Eastwood did not give tips on how to build the characters.[27] Vang also said that other white cast members made Hmong actors feel excluded.[27] Vang said that some important lines that the Hmong characters said in the Hmong language were not subtitled, so audiences developed a skewed perception of the Hmong people.[27]

I almost made a joke this morning in response to Barca's post about how the script just called for the actors to "shit, I dunno, act Asian, I guess"

glad to see that, yeah, that's pretty much exactly how it went

Imagine how goddam patriotic the Marky Mark movies of the 2040s will be.

The only thing I remember about Blood Work was how stupid the reveal was. Similar to one of my favorite bad movies I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. “Will Benson. Ben’s son?!?!’
You should read the book. Seriously. It's a million times better. Eastwood really fucked up the adaptation

I think I read that book too. As I recall the movie suffered from the problem of having a well known actor have a small part while at the same time there is a mystery about who the killer is...making it pretty easy to figure out who is going to end up being the killer.

Don't forget 13 Hours, the Benghazi ! movie

SO made the point recently that lately, directors, writers, producers, etc. seem to wait a requisite couple of years then make a movie about a very recent current event. I should have guessed all these movies were coming from one person

Pretty sure they aren't. Patriot's Day and Deepwater Horizon weren't Eastwood.
