Danny Manning Credibility Watch

I have no doubt that when coaches meet at the final 4 and discuss programs they say 'wow how effed up is that Wake situation'. Especially if Manning is fired after making the NCAAT last year.

Beware! The Bogeyman will get you!

He won 11 games this year. 11.

If Danny was real jerk there would be an easier path.

I just don't think it matters what 'we' say or think this year, it's not happening.

I need to find an employer who hires for a multi-million dollar CEO type position in a highly competitive, known to be cut-throat, industry whose only requirement for continued employment is "don't be a real jerk."

Manning isn't getting fired because (1) Wellman has a slow trigger and prides himself on giving coaches time; and (2) WF isn't going to pay the buyout on the extension. However, 95 percent of ADs in D1 could justify firing a fourth-year HC after a performance like this year's, last year's NCAA "appearance" notwithstanding. It's not just the W-L record. There is no energy or clear direction and the program is about to jump the rails (if it hasn't already) for the second time in a decade.

The argument to keep Manning another year because there isn’t a good replacement is lazy logic. BOT needs to step up, force RW to engage a hiring consultant and name Chil as interim HC while we get our collective shit together and fix this embarrassment.

ONLY if we're very clear that Chill is interim and in no way is it a "try out" for the full time job

I'm confused when people say firing Manning would be a black mark on the Wake basketball job within the coaching community. There are a list of schools who fire coaches after 4 years with our record or better and I can't think of one situation where theres been a backlash. Schools who are serious about basketball have no problem assessing the situation and future success and make a move if they dont believe their guy will turn things around.

Its hard to believe that the first year State coach finished higher than the defending national champs in his first year after losing an NBA first rounder.

If Manning had followed Dino I would completely agree. He didn’t. Keats has a ton of talent on his team and is having a similar season to what Manning did last year. There is a reason Gottfried was fired.

It's a shame since the record does not tell the whole story, No one can watch this team and mistake it for one that has been coached.

Manning won't be fired for all the reasons mentioned above plus he got an extension this season. If RW fires him a few months after an extension, that would be admitting he made a mistake an open the door for more questioning, no way that happens.

Didn't stop him with Dino.

The question is who is more stubborn, DM or RW ? Manning is too stubborn to listen to anyone or make any changes. He thinks he is smarter than anyone else.. so I doubt anything will change with him. RW is the same way... so he probably sees no problem. So we will suck Tuesday and all of next year

What sin did Dino commit that was so much worse than this season?

Didn't kiss the ring?

The worst part of all of this is the way they lost. Hero ball. Giving up. Not feeding Moore when he was the best option. 4 guard line up. I won't even call these rookie mistakes.

Manning lost this team early and did not re recognize it. That is his damning sin.

Let's say some of you get your wish and Danny gets fired this year. Then here is the Wake track record:

* Gaudio gets fired in 3 years after making the NCAA.
* [Redacted] takes over, does a miserable job, and leaves the program talent-depleted after 4 years. Fans put up billboards around town calling for his firing and then roll the quad when he gets fired.
* Manning gets Wake back to the tourney in year 3, develops a first rounder, has his entire starting front court go pro early, then has a miserable year 4, although has a top 15 recruiting class coming in.

How appealing does that situation look to a new coach from a job security perspective. He's getting another year, and he should.

Who gives a shit

Lots of ppl would love to coach in the acc for $2mm+ per year

Yep. Or we could hire a promising assistant coach for half of that.

I don’t think the job is going to be more promising after another year of bad coach. I don’t think we will attract any top mid-major coaches regardless.
