Wake Forest Football 2018 Offseason Discussion

Beal was impressive to me until he took that hit in the first half that took him out. Hope Beal is ok but he looks like a future star. RB depth is really good, probably the strength of the offense. Sage is a good WR, along with Dortch we have some good weapons on the outside. Hinton has great running ability but is not the passer we'd hope for. His short throws are not good. Newman was the most impressive QB to me, and if I was picking a starter based of the game I'd go with Newman. The run game should be more of a strength this year so maybe it will make up for the fact that there is no Wolford at QB.

Defensively the DBs looked good, were moving fast and hitting hard on every tackle. D-line was the second most impressive part of the D and LBs still seem like a work in progress.

IMHO the only thing that may keep us from having a great year is poor to average qb performance. I'm concerned that as long as he has been in the program, Hinton is not a reliable passer. With our ol and receivers a good qb could have great success.

I don’t think we have poor to average QB talent with Newman and Hartman...just inexperience. Hinton should not be our starting QB if he can’t throw the ball. Still some time and stats aren’t always a complete picture but hopefully he’s got a short leash.

This is a good summary of what I saw as well (left at halftime). Beal was incredible, coach is saying the doctors initial feedback is that they think it'll just be a nasty bruise so he should be okay. Hinton's throwing accuracy is still a huge question mark but his feet are dynamic. Newman had a one or two decent designed runs that I remember but his biggest issue right now imo is holding onto the ball. He needs work reading when the receivers will be open before they're open (like Wolford senior year), as he could've had a couple more long passes but took sacks instead. He's an impressive specimen.

Outside of the stats, the one play that sums up Hinton's passing day to me is the screen to Dortch for a touchdown. Dortch was maybe 8 yards away from him on the screen and he nearly bounced it - but Dortch's hands saved him and he took it in for a score.

move him to the slot. His shiftiness will be an asset there plus he doesn't need to throw it.

Did Newman run the ball at all? Would love to hear some qualitative comments about who was looking good. Any players surprise to the upside?

I saw him scramble once in the 30 min I was there. He's not slow. Not sure about read option skills though

So I saw Mike Allen had two sacks today. Did he look pretty good, are was that against the back ups

We don't need a great runner at QB- be nice though- but you have to be able to throw well to win in today's college game. We need someone who can hurt defenses and make defense play two dimensions which means whomever plays back there for us has to be able to throw accurately above all else. Hinton has never proven he can do this- now is the time. If Hinton can't throw the short and mid-range routes accurately, his great running running can easily be shut down by decent defenses. What we need is for one of these guys- hopefully all three- to be what Wolford was last year- efficient in the air, good decisions and guy who could hurt you when you had to play pass. Pretty simple really. The Leonard Fournette/LSU principle- now matter how good you are at something it won't work if you can't do something else- he couldn't run against defenses with 11 guys in 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. We have the coaches and the talent to not fall off the cliff offensively. Time for Hinton and Newman to step up and take that step behind what seems like a really good OL and receiving corps coming back. All this says a lot about our ability to recruit and develop players at this stage of Clawson's tenure.

Hinton is 131 - 245 (.53%) for 1502 yards with 8 TD's and 6 Int's in his WF career. Not too worried that he threw everything low on a windy, rainy, miserable day with only 2 starting OL's in front of him. He absolutely ran great. Surratt and Beal were great, too.

I expect Kendall to settle in. He’ll continue to develop and excel under Warren’s tutelage.

As with Wolford it will be a little roller coaster but he will emerge as an All-ACC nominee. Wolford’s Comp pct dipped to 55% after 60% as a Soph. John then jumped to 63% as a Sr.

Kendall started out as a rookie with 53% and has hovered at 57.3 to 57.8 since.. I expect him to have a full summer working on his footwork — as he noted yesterday - he needs to get used to the awkward positions the RPO puts a QB in..

I looked back at highlights from Clemson game last season (First Half!) and the quick slant to Dortch, sideline fly to Wade, and his passing was sharp.

I have great confidence in him. He is a sharp, tough kid and has all the intangibles to develop into an outstanding QB.

Good point about the weather conditions. Newman is noticeably larger and probably possesses bigger hands to hurl that ball through any weather conditions, and Newman had the better protection. Hinton may be better on a sunny day in the fall than he showed yesterday. Still, if I were Newman I would prepare as if I could be the starter because he may not be far off. The Wolford vs. Hinton QB battle was good for the position and in the end made Wolford who he was last year. Maybe this year we should keep that trend going with a Hinton vs. Newman battle.

This. It was a Spring Game. Time for RS Frosh(Allen,Surratt,Beal) to shine and also D.J. at LB — also RS Sophs like Traveon Redd, Manny Walker, & Newman. Also a time for some guys to solidify themselves as emerging stars like Kamara and Boogie on the front line. It’s a time for Chuck Wade to get as many live reps as possible.

In short. It was a Spring Game

Hinton was 12-18 in last week’s scrimmage.

I wish some of you would be half as patient with Hinton for one offseason as you were with Wolford for four years.

Not at all worried. Clawson will play whoever gives us the best chance to win. In addition, if Hinton looks to run more, we likely are going to need a Damn good backup if in fact he is the starter.

Clawson plays to win and will make the best choice when the time comes. Still positive about Hinton as our presumptive starter. Surprised Hartman has not gotten more buzz. He has had a strong spring.
