Official 2018 NBA Offseason Thread: the preseason cometh

No way! My memory sucks. Greg Kite was Paul Mokeski ugly yo. Not many duds in the NBA that ugly. There was a PF/C for Golden State 20 years ago that had a messed up head shape. He was pretty ugly too. He was one of the first "new" guys to wear a headband. I think he got arrested for some stalking stuff post NBA career ..

Popeye Jones?

Even if that’s not who you were thinking of, he deserves a mention on any kind of all-weird looking team.

How the hell do they figure the Spurs are going to be worse with DeRozan instead of Green? They must really like Kyle Andersen.

What’s the easiest way for me to place a legal wager on the over?

Who was saying the Hawks could be a playoff team if they had drafted Luka? Ph? RJ? Ha, lowest O/U in the league.

Not me....I said they should have taken him, but not that they would make the playoffs.

I should have clarified if they drafted and didn’t trade him. Nice gotcha, Ayo.

I think you are just looking at last year's W/L and extrapolating from there... I don't think that is the right way to look at it. I would assume that the Spurs "outperformed" on W/L last season based on metrics and are likely to see a drop this season. They also seem really thin.

Easiest way to wager legally? I'd say it would be to go to a state that takes legal wagers... Or have someone you know (trust) that lives in one of those states place a wager for you.

Kevin Pelton’s projections for the West (taken from reddit since I don’t have insider)

1. Golden State Warriors 58.6
2 Utah Jazz 53.4
3 Houston Rockets 53.0
4 Denver Nuggets 50.5
5 Minnesota Timberwolves 49.6
6 Oklahoma City Thunder 47.2
7 New Orleans Pelicans 44.1
8 Portland Trail Blazers 42.0
9 L.A. Lakers 41.2
10 San Antonio Spurs 38.5
11 LA Clippers 35.5
12 Memphis Grizzlies 33.1
13 Dallas Mavericks 32.1
14 Phoenix Suns 27.2
15 Sacramento Kings 25.4

Here is his blurb on the Spurs:

“The narrative about the Spurs since the Leonard trade has been that they're adding DeRozan to a team that won 47 games last season with virtually no contribution from Kawhi. (I even mentioned something similar in my trade grades.) The problem with that analysis is San Antonio lost two other starters in Danny Green and Kyle Anderson, who filled Leonard's spot in the lineup. Anderson rated as the Spurs' second-best player by RPM last season and Green (minus-0.2) projects better than DeRozan (minus-0.4) by RPM. Add in aging from San Antonio's veteran core, and it's certainly possible the Spurs won't be as good as they were last season, though I wouldn't necessarily bet against them making the playoffs.”

The bottom of the West is better. Who will be actively tanking at the bottom? The Kings don't own their pick, so no incentive there. The Suns added Ariza, so seems like they actually wanna try this year. But they may end up tanking. I could see the Clips maybe. Mavs seem to want to start trying now. Grizz with Conley and Gasol and now HOF Kyle Anderson? Doubt it. Lakers added the best player in the league. There just aren't many teams in the West that'll be actively tanking in my opinion.

Yup. And the Spurs went 15-1 against the bottom 4 in the West last year.

So the bottom of the West is only going to do better against the Spurs and not any other playoff team from last season. Got it.

Going to Philly later in the month. I know they’re ahead of the game but not sure where the legal sports books are.

No one said this. And how does that impact the Spurs win total? (It probably means it won’t take 47 to make it this year so the Spurs could still make the playoffs without matching last year’s win total)

But part of your argument is the Spurs won’t make the playoffs.

Legal sports book just over the state line in DE. Delaware Park is less than an hour drive down I-95 from Philly.

Nobody in PA is open for business yet.

Thanks. Not worth the Uber.

Huh? Yes, I'm saying the bottom of the West will be better and therefore will play the Spurs tougher, which could lead to a few more losses than last season versus those teams. We're talking about the Spurs' win total, so I don't understand what their play against "other playoff teams" has to do with anything, but obviously I think they'll play those teams tougher, too.

So do you think the Spurs will make the playoffs?

Those O/U seem to think the Spurs will take a bigger hit than other WC playoff teams.
