OMG HURRRICANE!!!!!!!111!!!!1

You have neighbors that may not be able to afford food without school lunches provided? That's terrible. What part of town do you live in?

Most any neighborhood/area within 3 miles of the center of uptown that's not Dilworth/MP or Elizabeth/Chantilly has a mix of incomes and plenty of kids like that.

Would be good to work toward a way to continue the free meal program when school is canceled.

Imagine some school districts have that in place.

I don't know of anything through the school system, but there are private groups like the guys at https://www.profoundgentlemen.org/ who are providing lunches for kids today. The founder is an awesome dude. Pulled it together in less than a day.

Makes sense. I guess I was thinking nextdoor-type neighbors.

Across the street neighbors and 3 houses down neighbors. Kids ride from the same bus stop neighbors. Kids show up on our porch to play after school neighbors.

For my neighbors who eat breakfast and lunch at school, it means they may not eat today/tomorrow, and may not eat Monday/Tuesday either. Meanwhile, due to early dismissal yesterday and working parents, they will likely spend 6.5 straight days at home unsupervised. Or, their parents will forgo getting paid today so they can be home.

Make it 7.5 days. Next Wednesday is a Teacher Work Day. Kids could very conceivably not go to school from yesterday at lunch until next Thursday morning. They haven't had a full week of school since the first week. If schools are closed Monday/Tuesday, the district will have had 13.5 days of school in the first 4 weeks.

That's a LOT of days off for parents who work hourly jobs, or a lot of days for kids to spend home by themselves. Not to mention all of the hourly CMS workers who are earning 13.5 days of pay out of 20 potential workdays. There are undoubtedly many people in Charlotte who will struggle to put food on the table or pay rent due to this storm and closing schools today adds to that problem.

Also, just saw it confirmed that there's no stipulation from the Red Cross that schools that are shelters be closed down...was a CMS decision.

Cape Lookout reporting surf of 30-40 feet.

I saw photos of Surf City. The waves are cresting right at pier height before breaking. I could drop right in from the pier without ever having to paddle out.

'bout ter start shootin' that big ol' bitch. She jest gotta git a lil' closer.

I'm somewhat surprised Trump hasn't publicly suggested just nuking Florence before it hits the coast. It seems like the kind of "solution" he would propose, no matter how impractical. Based on the Woodward book, though, Mattis would just nod, and then ignore the suggestion/order.

In New Bern, just lost power at my house. I’ll be dry at my house, but lots of areas will flood from storm surge

Coworker just closed on a house in New Bern 3 weeks ago to work remote. No flood insurance. 1.32 miles from the Neuse river.

Found out a friend who just moved to Wilmington evacuated to Asheville. Looks like that wasn’t a good move.

Florence is pretty openly transgender.

Maybe not.

Pretty much every elementary school in CMS has free breakfast.

We're down to about 60/150 guests if anyone wants to swing by the wedding in High Point tomorrow!
