Birmingham Bowl, Deacs vs. Memphis Tigers

He missed two deep balls that should have been touchdowns. He does not seem to have touch on the long throws. He missed the tight end in the middle of the field wide open, and Surat on the sideline. Hartman does not miss those throws. Hartman’s ability to make quick decisions is Brees like. Newman holds the ball very long and does not seem to think vertically, except the last 1.5 minutes of a game.

I have to disagree here. Hartman certainly misses his own share of deep and midrange throws. He might be a tad more accurate than Newman, but that is countered by Newmans much greater ability to break tackles.

Defense played well today too. Only gave up 21 points to that highly touted Memphis offense. We had plenty of opportunities in that 2nd half to pull away and make the ending boring because of the defense. Of course that’s just not how we operate.

I think that really bodes well for the Hemphill era. Excited to see how we look in the Spring Game.

i dont know who deserves to lose more, clawson for squib kicking it or memphis for not going for the td. bad coaching on both sides.

Agreed. There were some questionable calls for sure. Still got the trophy though.

Not sure if the squib kick was a bad decision or just really poorly executed. Think I would have gone with the high pooch kick, but all turned out well and for once Wake got really lucky. Our last offensive possession was terrible-- way too conservative-- but hey Merry Christmas to all and lets hope we get a dismissed Danny Manning for Christmas-- what a difference in head coaches!

Also, not sure that the MVP was not Alex Bachman-- talk about coming up clutch on two catches! Gonna miss him

Yeah I’m just guessing, but I would think the squib kick was meant to just be a hard bouncer much deeper. I think the kick was just misjudged.

Awesome game against a highly touted offense. The defense really stepped up in this game and then the offense w/Newman, Bachman, and the backs won the game. Terrible decision on the squib. If I'm the kicker I would have been so jacked by that last score that I would have told Dave that I'm kicking it into the stands! Memphis coach will be pissed at himeslef for no real shots into the endzone. I say Co-MVP's. Newman managed & played a great game, made big throws, and kept his poise. Bachman picked up the loss of Dortch as he has done all season. Fun game!!

Memphis scoring their last touchdown was our only chance. Cannot believe they did not run the clock down and kick a chip shot field goal, with no time left on the clock. We got the ball back, down 4, with two timeouts, and the rest is history. Terrible clock management and strategy from Memphis.

saw memphis had a 98.2% after their last td.

underrated sequence from last drive was right after the long bachman catch, we hurried to the line and got the next play off real quick, where newman looked the defense off before tossing a fade to surratt in the end zone. thats nfl-type stuff right there.

also was looking through the PBP and remembered those two huge catches by hinton on the td drive when we really had our backs against the wall.

not sure, we had all three timeouts so we would have gotten the ball back with plenty of time only needing a fg to win.

The thought went through my mind, did we let them score, but the replay looked like we were trying on that play. I think you’re right though, Memphis could have left us no time.
