Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

Saying the right coach needs 4 - 5 years is asking to hire a coach that is not yet ready for prime time. Manning had a team make the last 4 in year 3. Manning. The right coach as the only variable change would have had that team in the actual tourney with a shot at a win or two depending on speed and brackets.

Wes Miller could bring back Wake Bball and be the face of Wake for the next 30 years. Could be a legend around these parts.

Or he could suck and Wake basketball be dead forever. His resume does not warrant consideration for an ACC coach. Way too risky for where we are now. Matta and Oats need to be 1-2, in some order. If we hire Miller, it should only be because we have to go deep on our candidate list. It would be a pure cronyism hire otherwise.

Yep went from 2-8 to 13-19 (he went 11-11 overall that season and 10-8 in the SoCon). Not intending to discredit him because I also believe he is the best choice for us to hire right now

Oh, this would be the coach to potentially kill Wake basketball? I'd say it's dead. And I'd be shocked if any legit coach would entertain Wake. Bz and DM were way down on the list and that was before we had the decade of irrelevance.

Cronyism? You can’t be serious. The kid went to UNC. Miller is delivered to us on a platter. Only WF alums could screw this up.

He’s just not that impressive. None of us would think twice about him if not for his Wake connections.

There is nothing structurely wrong with Wake hoops. Our recruting floor even during this long term down spell is pretty solid.

Wes would still be on my list of realistic candidates if he weren’t connected but there’s certainly an element of familiarity that gives him a boost. I generally look at any coaches that have a low major in the KP top 100 and have an upward career trajectory - that’s where you’re going to find good value hires if you don’t get guys in the home run tier.

I think Matta and Oats should be first option if they would come, but I would love to have Miller also. In a sick kind of way I've enjoyed not having to worry about my Deacs this year and the only way to get change is for us to hit bottom... We're there!

This. Our best two recruits since the beginning of the down turn are on this team.

Don't you understand? We're doomed FOREVER if we hire ANYBODY not named Wes Miller or fail to build an on-campus arena. Get that through your thick dwarf skull!!!!11!!

No. We need a stadium and 4-5 years.

Ok I'll one up ya DR. A new stadium, 4-5 years for the new coach, and for the love of God please do something about the corner of Deacon Blvd and University. Can't expect recruits to get excited coming to the arena from campus and looking at that shit.

“Folks didnt want a smaller arena and Wes. So I hired a guy from Colorado.”

To be clear: dissenters like you caused it.

He is 0-24 versus ranked teams. If he was anywhere near as good as some here say, he would have won at least ONE of those games.

He can't even beat Danny Manning in three tries.

In this era, you need a coach with extensive, high level ties to AAU programs. We have no idea if HOF Wes has this access.

In 2-3 years, the entire landscape of college basketball and especially will change as the NBA CBA eliminates one and done. When that gets rid of most of the Top 20 players each year, we will need be ready to compete and detect the up and coming players.

I wonder if Nova has an assistant who is ready to be a HC. Jay Wright built his program on players in the 25-120 range. He and his assistants have been consistently hitting on this range since 2001. It's happened way too often to be luck. If we could sign a coach who knows this methodology inside and out, it could be a perfect fit.

@ two 20-win teams b2b this week in Furman and Wofford. I suspect Wes' and UNCG's Kenpom luck is about to run out

They “only” have a 31 and 19 percent chance of winning these (lose by 6 and 9 are the projections) so barring two blowouts they wouldn’t even drop much in KP. They should be something like 20-5 based on schedule and close wins but that’s still a great year at UNCG.

Wofford at 28 in KP is wild. If they only lose once more and don’t win the conference title they are right on the bubble.

This might be the most damning part of Wes' resume for the Wake job tbh.

Also want to make two things clear for DR:

1. I wouldn't be mad if we hired Wed. I think it'd be a solid hire but we should expect to have to give him 4-5 to build a program here. I do not believe it'd be a quick turnaround but I'd support him.

2. I have never made any decisions for Wake Forest athletics - nor have I had my opinion heard by anyone. I'd suspect that is the case for 99.9% of this message board.
