Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

Could you please explain the anti-Semitism in the original tweets?

Wish they had been silent.

Yep. She should not have been asked to apologize by any dem and should not have apologized. Complete bullshit. Keep hearing people say the tweet are anti-semitic but not one person saying why, including in that article.

I mean the alleged anti-Semitism is pretty apparent in the "hypnotized" and "all about the Benjamins" phrasing. I don't personally see any problems with the tweets as I think it's pretty obvious they were not aimed at Jews as a whole, but at the concerted efforts of pro-Israel PACs and the efforts of the Netanyahu government to frame any possible anti-Israel statements as racist/anti-Semitic in order to delegitimize criticism of Israel. But that's where I'm assuming people who actually are arguing in good faith (i.e., not Republicans) that there are anti-Semitic elements to the tweets are getting it from.

I don't think I saw the 'hypnotized" comment, but anyone who is pretending it was about anything other than pro-Israel PAC money is being intentionally obtuse and full of shit.

Well that's the thing. The GOP doesn't care how disingenuous the argument is, they were going to come after Tlaib and Omar. If you can make the only 2 Muslim women in the House be perceived as anti-Semitic, you neuter their ability to effect necessary change. They have been prominent in their early days in Congress and that terrifies the GOP, the same party that accused George Soros of buying the 2018 election and paying protestors for years.

Absolutely - and it is incredibly stupid for dems to fall for it again, but they are also getting those Benjamins.

This lady is all over the place. Here she is spreading Islamophobia:

I looked through her twitter feed and couldn't find the "Hypnotized" tweet. She must have deleted it. Do you know what it said? The all about the Benjamins tweet was about greedy politicians doing anything for campaign cash, not about Jewish people in anyway, except that a pro-Israel (and really pro-Likud specifically) lobbying organization are the ones giving out the Benjamins, which goes pretty counter to the greedy stereotype that any anti-Semitic comment about Jews and money would be referencing.

I didn't scroll back 7 years, probably why I missed it. Still not anti-Jewish. It is in opposition to specific policies of the Israeli government.

Yeah but she said Allah. And seriously, they dug back 7 years and that's the best they could come up with? A critique of the Israeli government during a war that killed 50% civilians?

Regardless of intent, or the fact that it’s lrettu evident she was calling out pro Israel PACS, she apologized. And prominent Dems called on her to do so (rightly or wrongly).

Have prominent Republicans like McConnell or anyone else publicly rebuked Trump for his trail of tears tweet yet? Or when he called non-Scandinavian (ahem) countries “shit holes?”

Asking for a friend... Angus.

Remember when Republicans complained that Democrats saw any criticism of Obama as racist?

Masters of projection.

^Exactly. It's obvious that conservatives have viewed these younger, rookie female Dem House members as a threat from the beginning, and the game plan (as witnessed on Fox News every day) has been to endlessly attack them, shred their credibility, and try to destroy them before they could learn the political ropes and start becoming a greater problem for them. AOC has been their favorite target, but Tlaib and Omar have also been frequent targets. I'm sure that in the future, anytime they say anything on any issue, Fox and other right-wing outlets will immediately dismiss them as anti-Semitic, and thus safely ignored. As far as her tweets, like many others here I read them earlier today and couldn't find the anti-Semitism. To right-wingers, of course, any public criticism of Israel is grounds to scream anti-Semitism, but it's clear that a good many Democrats fear the pro-Israel political lobby as well, and the supposedly liberal news media piled on as much as Fox.

The anti-Semitism is the old trope that Jews use money to control the world. You can argue that shouldn't apply because she was referring to a PAC, but Twitter is not the best place for nuance. (And it is absolutely a problem that some will characterize any Israel criticism as anti-Semitic.)

As for the hypnotize tweet, that one is older, she discussed it on the Daily Show (skip to 7:45):

And yes, it is frustrating to hear the caterwauling from Republicans who regularly fear-monger over George Soros conspiracy theories. They are clearly trying to tear the newbies down. But there were Jewish Dem members of Congress that called it out as well.

Now ask Kevin McCarthy about this:

Weird that Brad wasn’t bothered by McCarthy’s anti-semitism. It’s almost like he cares more about scoring points than he does protecting Jews.

I guess if Matt Gaetz ain’t offended, neither is Brad.
