Saudi World Golf Tour 2022/2023 Thread

A lot of pundits have been saying that this year's US Open is Mickelson's last real shot since it's being played at Pebble. He ht 50% of the fairways this week and missing fairways will be much more penal in June. Unless he significantly improves on that number, I don't see it.

They were saying on the weekend broadcast that the fairways would be pretty darn narrow in June. I mean, the course is only 68-6900 yards long, so they have to do something other than just have fast and heavily sloped greens. And Phil's problem off the tee is that he isn't much more accurate with irons off the tee. He was dumping irons in the drink in Paris. But both he and Tiger have great histories at Pebble, so you'd think this US Open would be 1 of their best last shots. Of course, we wouldn't be discussing this had Bones snapped his driver in half when Phil asked for it on 18 at Winged Foot. Though I still say Monty's choke from the fairway with a 7-8 iron was way worse than Phil's.

I guess? I don't know, they agreed on a contract before the tournament and Kuchar paid him more than they agreed upon. It would definitely be easy for Kuchar to pay him way more but then what is the point of having a contract with a one stop caddie?

Kuchar won $1.3 million that week. There is no doubt that he wasn't obligated to pay the caddy more than the $4000 that was contractually agreed upon, but Kuchar is a PGA vet; he knows the drill: when you win the tourney, you take care of your caddy, not because you are legally bound to do it, but because its the right thing to do (and something that essentially every tour player does and has done forever).

Kuchar has won almost $50 million on tour (and has been a paid an s-load more in endorsements); don't be a douche; hook your caddy; $50K would've meant the world to the caddy (and would've been far less than the standard 'tip' to the caddy for the winning golfer), and it meant nothing to Kuchar. F him.

Not only did he win the $1.3MM, he gets bonus money from all of his sponsors for winning as well. Really hard to see how he didn't shaft this guy.

Typically, you take care of your caddie when you win because you ARE obligated to do so - most caddie arrangements spell out what they get on a weekly basis and what they get as bonus for a win. One-week deals are different, of course, but are also spelled out. According to Kuch, and I have no reason to think he is lying, he paid the guy a bit more than he was obligated to - and, in the interview I saw, said he offered the guy more but he turned it down. That didn't make a lot of sense to me (why would he turn it down?) but that is what he said. Doesn't seem like a big deal.

he turned it down because it was a shit, facesaving bribe.

This is actually not true. Most caddie deals are handshake agreements with no contracts or legal requirements. A lot of these tour players have investors, shares to pay out after wins, a team to pay that all have contractual bonuses, etc. It’s a lot like any other startup business with angel investors and early employees who have a stake if the company hits it big. Caddies for the most part are a different breed, you’d be surprised how many are paid under the table or have no official recourse with the players. Kuchar is 100% right that someone got in this guy’s ear and stirred the pot, I’d guess for a hefty chunk of the cash. Going public wasnt something that caddie could just do on his own, so it’s pretty much extortion. Kuchar’s pretty much screwed now though - should have given him $25k in hundreds before he left. Now his choices are to look like the asshole or reward the extortion. Lose/lose.

Kuch's making a mistake thinking this is going away per his quotes yesterday

He basically doubled down on being a shithead. If anything, I feel like people who were Kuch neutral will move to Kuch haters. Which is actually good, because the Tour needs more foils. Reed, Watson and DeChambeau aren't enough.

Wait, do you think Matt Kuchar has shares to pay back from each of his tournaments where he cashes in?
