So a mix of option 1 and option 2. In the case of a "separate budget" rather than just a different GL line on the whole university budget (still separate from the endowment), you'd still expect an eight figure contract buyout clause to get direct scrutiny even if trustees aren't in a good place to determine market value. That's different than an 80k salary vs 120k salary, that's a significant % of your operating budget.

Totally agree. Even if you don’t know shit about the market for basketball coaches you ought to be able to apply the bullshit test to an $18MM buyout to any contract that isn’t for a coach with a HOF resume.

were Manning to be bought out next year, would that show up on the 2020 tax filings?

Coach K probably doesn’t even have an $18M buyout.

Not having seen the contract of course, I'm assuming the buyout is whatever Manning's annual base salary is X the number of years remaining on his contract. He has 6 years left on his contract and is probably making at least $2m/year in base salary, so I'm guessing the buyout would be at least $12m. To me the biggest problem isn't the annual salary, but the fact we felt comfortable extending him until 2025. I get giving Jim Grobe a 10-year extension coming off an ACC title. Giving Manning a contract running until 2025 for getting us on the right side of the bubble is where Wellman fucked up.

again, i don't know how these things work at wake, but external comms should be a funnel for anything that goes out to the wider world from your organization from the tiniest press release or social post to good morning america

Yeah, I agree it probably should work that way, but I don't think it does exactly like that at Wake; if it does, much like Say Hey's speculation of the financial details of coaches' contracts, I expect quite a bit of latitude is given to the AD to just come up with whatever they want and present it how they want. As long as it doesn't leave Wake in any kid of legal bind, they probably just stamp OK on everything without really going into detail. They def wouldn't put up a fight with that Q&A because a few hundred of us might go crazy because of how contemptuous and tone deaf it is.

Anyway, some of Wake's operations are still pretty small time. I don't even mean that in a bad way, necessarily. But they don't really have a clue how to handle this type of stuff, and, I suspect, are willing to deal with the fall out for a bit, gambling that it won't make much of a dent nationally, and will blow over relatively soon.

And you have guys like Ben Sutton, whose name draws a lot of water at Wake, telling us that we're all jerkoffs and dead beats. We don't draw shit. That's who admin and the AD listen to. If he says it's cool and we're a bunch of lunatics, then that's what they'll go with.

Very true. The people who could write an eight figure check (or have already) seemingly don't mind.

You will not find a bigger Lawrence "Poetry In" Moten fan than I, but I think the last thing I remember him doing for the Cuse in the tourney was pulling a Webber/Manning and calling a timeout they didn't have? Am I making that up?

Jesus Christ, UVA losing at halftime ? Gotta be some pucked bholes amongst that fanbase right now.

Also not sure how they leave out my dudes Miles Simon and Khalid Reeves, if we're going for dudes who lit it up in the tourney but didn't do much after. If that is the theme, even, which it seems to be.

Khalid Reeves was NASTY.

1994 Tourney. They went to the Final Four. He and Stoudamire ran shit.
