Football Prognostications...

Lectro - thanks for all the comments about the OL. (as a former OL, I love this stuff). Is Godfrey really 345? There were so many comments last year about him being 'too big' at 335, I thought he was going to slim down some....somewhat like Chris DeGeere when he slimmed down from 360 to 330(?) his senior year.
Center still seems to be a question. I have heard good things (in print) about both Williams and Summers and thought one of them would be the guy. Ford is a welcome newcomer and I don't know enough about him.
Overall, size-wise, we have plenty of bulk, with our starters averaging around 6' 5" 320. (ie. NFL size). If they can get some added strength, quickness and aggressiveness, we'll be ok. Maybe even better than ok.

The plan is to see Dennis get down to 330-335 -- he is just a big human being. He and Looney look like a couple of SEC Hogs. Dennis has the top squat number on the squad (670) as he tracks 700 lbs.

Continuing on with the OL we turn to Sophomores Steven Chase and Devin Bolling. Again, 2 kids with the neccessary size to compete. Chase is a skilled athlete for a man his size. He grew up a TE (as did many a talented OL) and has added 50 pounds since his arrival. Another young and very sizable rookie at 6'7-315. Devin Bolling was a late snag away from Virginia Tech. Again, outstanding size and good feet. A 6'5-300 pound prospect who, along with Chase, will push for a starting position in 2012 and provide solid depth in 2011.

Moving along with the OL argument --

The initial phase of Grobe's program would have the Rs Sr with a history of starts as opposed to putting in a young upstart. The program has evolved to the point where young guys can insert themselves ahead of the more veteran player. That point may have come for Michael Hoag. Hoag has been a decent player thus far but has somehow eluded questions of squandered time. He is a talented guy but he is in the Louis Frazier mold (and there is nothing wrong with that!) -- But, for gridiron purposes, the 6'4-335 pound mauler Colin Summers appears ready to sieze the moment. Colin is a very physical and energetic player who can, sometimes, play too long after the whistle. You can rest assured that throughout his career Deacons will become accustomed to "skirmishes" while on the field. A Big happy guy off the field it should be noted. I look forward to seeing Colin take the starting nod and in my uneducated opinion would see Mike Hoag accept a utility position (much like Blake Lingruen did for 3/4 of his career). He could handle 3 positions as a key veteran backup.

Continuing on with the Rookie (RS Frosh) Class of OL and my rank speculations...let me say that I'd also shift Garrick Williams to a utility role and would contine grooming Whit Barnes (6'4-293 / Rs Soph) as a...backup.

Who would be the Center!?

I'd make that kid from Pahokee a Center. Antonio Ford has a tremendous power base... Big skull-crackin noggin --- I love those kids where they have to order a special helmet :) This guy may not have polished Center skills and may never have had training but coming off the bus he sure looks like an All-Pro Center He is up to 6'3 and 325.

More OL talk to come...

The Oracle 'sees' and the deed is done...

Antonio Ford will officially be a Center.

Lectro,

Are those sizes really accurate? If so, it seems our OL is going to be MUCH bigger than in years past.

They are...Godfrey is slated to lose 20 over summer.

Again, Antonio Ford has been moved to C.

That is some serious "remains to be seen" going on at FSU. But I love seeing them hyped as pre-season juggernauts. I think their QB will get banged up out in Norman.

There you go Chris

How about the time and date of the comments on Antonio Ford there dickwhistle...you like that?

No announcement made of that move-- anywhere.

Hump Leg Dickie boy.

Love it!

I'm very new to these boards, but have been reading them everyday for the past year or two (good time at work). I love Lectro's posts; you know your football. I sit back, watch, analyze, think about what Wake needs, and despite your vitriolic and insulting language, I for one think you know your shit. If I make it down to a Wake game you're someone I'd love to have a beer with. When I went to the Orange Bowl in 06 it was awesome catching up with about 30 of my fraternity buddies who I hadn't seen. One thing is true, coming from me a 20+ year grad, is Wake forms a very special bond.

I also watche my 06 Orange Bowl dvd again the other night, and what I see then vs. now is a defense with an attitude. I think attitude starts with linebackers (Abbate, Curry, Arnoux), and I just don't see any , and I mean any, "hits" from our linebackers.

It's always true that when your safeties lead you in tackles, your front and middle are weak.

I say get Zach and Betros, Derricus, in there and just rotate in linebackers until you find some hitters.

Watching LSU game, the announcers said their punter was from Australia. Looks real good, keeps pinning WVU inside the 5. Looks good. Hopefully Alex will be able to continue to develop and really get it, his upside is very high

You make some excellent points about the hitters -- we have a crew of Safeties (some more built for 'Bandit' type position) and then our young speedy linebackers have to step to the forefront (Olson,Jackson,Allen). Betros is playing good ball and he has all facets of the game. Riley has played inspired but he is still missing tackles in space.

As a side, ol' Lec will try and tone down the "vitriolic and insulting language"...I will say that I learned early the pitfalls of a "positive spin" on a message board...most folks mistake kindness for weakness and without any physical presence they will attack until the carcass is eaten. The web is Darwinian and an 'advanced criticality' is at once the preserve of analysis and the hallmark of a dying animal.
