2019 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

From the Michigan website "Maizenbrew" here are the potential candidates:

- Luke Yaklich or Saddi Washington (current assistants): Washington was the interim HC when Beilen was sidelined with heart surgery. No college HC experience for either.
- Laval Jordan (Butler HC former Beilein assistant)
- Chris Beard (Michigan has the money for the hefty buyout)
- Porter Moser
- Juwan Howard (Heat assistant; Fab 4 member; a reach)
- Nate Oats (from Michigan; would he leave Bama so soon?)
- Tony Bennett (Midwestern guy; would take a lot of $)
- Brad Stevens (I guess whenever a big college job opens; his name will pop up; not happening)
- Jay Wright (does not seem inclined to leave Philly)
- Pitino :)cool:)

Given the timing, I'm guessing Saddi Washington with an outside shot for Laval Jordan or Porter Moser. Would laugh at Bama if Oats took the job.

One interesting WF-related note about the Beilien to the Cavs is that Mike Gansey is the assistant GM of the Cavs. Mike Gansey played for Beilein at West Virginia, and scored 29 points (leading scorer in that game) in WF's bitter OT loss in the 2005 NCAA tourney.

I've heard Stevens quoted as how much better it is coaching in the NBA (fewer off-court demands on your time such as recruiting, alumni events, etc.). Does that mean he would turn down Dook or UNC? I don't know but even as badly as things ended for the Celtics this year I can't see him headed to Ann Arbor.

If the Celtics fired Brad Stevens, he would certainly be the top candidate for any open NBA job. Heck, his availability could make Nate McMillan's seat slightly warm.

Stevens would need about 4 more terrible seasons for Celtics ownership to even consider firing him. Ain't happening.

An interesting factor for the Celtics will be how much it will cost to keep Rozier with Kyrie gone. Horford ain't opting out of $30M next year. If he gets $15M or so, the Celtics can't sign anyone else or than a mid-level exception.

Stevens is not leaving Boston for Michigan, but the conventional wisdom is that if he does leave for a college job, it won't be the Celtics pushing him out, but Stevens deciding he prefers college hoop over the NBA. If Stevens likes the NBA better, even if the Celtics decided to go in another direction (at some point in the future), there would NBA teams lining up to hire him.

That's far from a guarantee. If Horford thinks he can get a 3 year/70 or 4 year/ 80 million dollar contract, he is opting out in a heartbeat i'd guess.

“4 more?” Are you counting this as a terrible season?

I think he's been mentioned before, but Celtics assistant Micah Shrewsberry left for an assistant's gig at Purdue because he said he liked the relationships in college better. Might be an intriguing option if we can Manning, even though he has no head coaching experience. He's an Indiana guy and has been an assistant at Purdue before, but Painter seems like a lifer. I guess the Butler job could open up, though. I don't know, I just saw the news and remembered someone mentioning him before.

Of the assistant options, it's hard to imagine someone better.

Yes. This was a really bad season. Celtics ownership adores Stevens. It would take A LOT for them to push Stevens out. A lot.

I have no idea what Michigan will do but if it wants an established head coach that would be interested in a program with a higher ceiling, the three guys I'd target are Steve Prohm, Ben Howland and Kevin Willard.

The game has passed Howland by. In four years at MSU, he's made The Dance once and has a 32-40 record in the SEC. He has no ties to the B10 or region and is 61.

He just coached Mississippi State to their best season since 2008 after inheriting a [Redacted] grade program.

I mean, we all know you hate Howland, but that’s a pretty one-sided summation of his qualifications.

I mean, you're talking to a guy who once said Wake is in a better position with Danny Manning going forward than UVA is with Tony Bennett, so...

If Michigan ends up with Billy Donovan out of this, I’ll be so annoyed.

I think they’ll go with one of their 2 internal candidates, but already hearing wild rumors.

I don't "hate" Howland. Not liking someone or thinking he's a good choice doesn't equal "hate".

As to one-sided, which part isn't true?

I didn't even mention how badly his tenure at UCLA ended.
